Raphael Varane, the French World Cup winner, announced his retirement from football at the age of 31 while stating that he will continue his association with Como in a non-playing role. Varane had joined the Italian club for the current season but was omitted from the Serie A squad due to a knee injury in August. He expressed his excitement about starting a new phase off the pitch and hinted at sharing more details soon regarding his new role.

Varane’s football journey began at the French club Lens, from where he moved to Real Madrid in 2011 at the age of 18. During his time at Madrid, he won multiple La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. In 2014, he secured his first Champions League crown and followed it up with a league and European double three years later. After his successful stint at Madrid, Varane joined Manchester United in 2024 and won a League Cup and an FA Cup with the club. He moved to Como last season but could only play one Coppa Italia match before sustaining a knee injury.

Reflecting on his career, Varane expressed gratitude for the opportunities and success he achieved with every club he represented, including the French national team. Having made his international debut in 2013, Varane’s career pinnacle was winning the World Cup with France in 2018. He concluded his international career two years ago after earning 93 caps. Varane emphasized the importance of sincerity and leaving a positive impact wherever he goes, beyond the trophies and accolades he received.

Former teammates and colleagues paid tribute to Varane, with United’s Bruno Fernandes expressing his appreciation for their time together. The football world acknowledged Varane’s contributions to the sport and his dedication to each team he played for. Varane’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career that saw him achieve success both at the club and international level. As he embarks on a new chapter with Como in a non-playing capacity, Varane’s legacy in football will continue to inspire the next generation of players.
