A new spacious lounge with a quiet ‘stress relief area’ for people of determination recently opened at Dubai International Airport (DXB) Terminal 2, making it the world’s first special lounge designed specifically for individuals with disabilities. The lounge is equipped with features that cater to the needs of those with autism, visual impairments, and hearing impairments. Contrasting surfaces facilitate movement for those with visual impairments, while seating located close to staff allows for easier communication for those with hearing impairments. The quiet ‘stress relief area’ provides a peaceful sanctuary for individuals with autism, creating a calming environment.

The lounge project was a collaboration between Dubai Airports and dnata, the lounge’s operator, as part of a multi-million-dirham program that includes plans to open similar lounges in other terminals. The Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, Majid Al Joker, expressed the airport’s commitment to ensuring a seamless travel experience for all guests, regardless of their individual needs. The inclusive strategy for people of determination also includes initiatives such as the ‘Sunflower Ribbon Programme,’ which enables discreet identification and assistance for these travelers, ensuring priority access through travel procedures, security checkpoints, and boarding.

Dubai Airports have received accreditation from the Airports Council International under the Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Programme, recognizing the commitment of global airports to facilitating travel for all passengers. Additionally, the airport has been awarded the ‘Autism Friendly’ certification by the Dubai Autism Centre and has become the first international airport to receive the ‘Autism Accredited Centre’ designation. The airport’s inclusive strategy also includes a training program for staff on how to deal with invisible challenges and dedicated facilities and services such as free parking, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services.

The lounge at DXB Terminal 2 offers a modern and welcoming environment for people of determination, featuring a calm and relaxing atmosphere inspired by the spirit of Dubai. In addition to the quiet ‘stress relief area’ and dedicated seating for those with hearing impairments, the lounge also includes a dedicated area for unaccompanied minors. It reflects Dubai Airports’ commitment to diversity and inclusivity, providing a comfortable and accessible space for travelers with disabilities to relax and prepare for their journey. This groundbreaking initiative sets a new standard for airport facilities around the world, showcasing the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in the travel industry.

As part of Dubai Airports’ inclusive strategy, the airport continues to prioritize the needs of people of determination, offering support and assistance to ensure a smooth and stress-free travel experience. From priority access through security checkpoints to designated facilities and services, Dubai Airports are dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all passengers. The opening of the special lounge at Terminal 2 marks a significant milestone in the airport’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, setting a positive example for airports worldwide to follow. With ongoing initiatives and programs in place, Dubai Airports are leading the way in providing a supportive and inclusive travel experience for individuals with disabilities.
