The Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, Wael Al Mubarak, recently issued a new directive that emphasizes the importance of reporting sick horses and other equines to the authorities. Failure to do so can result in jail time, fines, or both. This regulation covers a wide range of equine animals, including horses, mules, donkeys, zebras, and ponies. The law was established under Article 6 of Law No. (52) of 2014, which aims to protect animal welfare across Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The decree highlights the need for swift action when it comes to reporting any infected animal suffering from one of the 20 listed epidemic diseases to the Animal Health Directorate. This includes diseases such as African Horse Sickness, Equine Infectious Anemia, Dourine, Vesicular Stomatitis, and rabies, among others. The message is clear: neglecting to report a sick equine is not only a matter of compassion but also a legal obligation. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the welfare of our four-legged friends.

The consequences for failing to report a sick horse are severe, with offenders facing up to a month behind bars, fines of up to 1,000 dinars, or both. The aim of this measure is to protect animal health and ensure that sick animals receive the necessary care and treatment. It is crucial for veterinarians, owners, and caretakers to be vigilant and report any signs of illness in their equine animals promptly.

The new directive is a part of a broader effort to crack down on neglect and ensure that all animals, including horses and other equines, receive the care and protection they need. With authorities ramping up efforts to enforce animal welfare laws, individuals must be aware of their responsibilities and obligations when it comes to reporting sick animals. By taking action and reporting sick horses, individuals can help protect the health and well-being of these animals.

If you come across a sick horse, it is important to remember that reporting it is not just a moral duty but also a legal requirement. By reporting sick horses and other equines promptly, individuals can help prevent the spread of disease and ensure that these animals receive the care they need. With the new directive in place, neglecting to report a sick horse can have serious consequences, so it is essential to act quickly and responsibly when it comes to the welfare of our four-legged friends.
