The Plastic Surgery Department at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha, Qatar recently made history by successfully performing a groundbreaking plastic surgery using microsurgical reconstructive techniques for flap-based perforating arteries. The surgery was performed on a patient from Gaza who had suffered significant loss of back tissue, leaving her unable to sit or move. Dr. Attallah Hamada Hamouda, Consultant and Director of the Plastic Surgery Department at HMC, attributed the success of the surgery to the team’s surgical expertise and the adoption of international standards and advanced medical techniques.

Dr. Salim Noureddin Al Laham, Associate Consultant at HMC’s Plastic Surgery Department and leader of the surgical team, explained that the reconstruction was successful without causing any damage to other tissue thanks to the innovative and advanced method used to use a number of flap-based perforating arteries. Following the reconstructive surgery and physiotherapy, the patient was able to regain her normal life and perform daily activities without pain. Prior to the operation, the patient had undergone surgical debridement to remove damaged tissue and was put on a high protein diet to prepare for the surgery.

HMC’s advanced capacity and world-class facilities played a crucial role in facilitating the successful surgery. The Plastic Surgery Department at HMC has made significant progress in treating complex cases, including the development of the “Qatar Flap,” a surgical innovation in microsurgical reconstructive hand surgery. Dr. Sequina Al Saigel, Plastic Surgery Specialist at HMC, also participated in the surgery and emphasized the importance of such procedures in helping patients from Gaza regain their functional abilities, especially considering the complexity of wounds many Gaza patients present with.

The patient from Gaza who underwent the surgery had arrived at HMC in a deteriorated health condition, suffering from a severe shortage of back tissue, burns around the thigh area, and fungal sepsis due to lack of treatment for her wounds over time. The successful surgery was a significant milestone not only in terms of the medical achievements but also in the impact it had on the patient’s quality of life. The advancements made by the Plastic Surgery Department at HMC highlight the commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to all patients and the continuous pursuit of surgical innovations to address complex cases.

The success of the surgery using microsurgical reconstructive techniques for flap-based perforating arteries is a testament to the skill and dedication of the team at the Plastic Surgery Department at HMC. By adopting international standards and advanced medical techniques, the team was able to achieve a significant milestone in the field of plastic surgery. The positive outcomes of the surgery not only improved the patient’s physical health but also her overall well-being by allowing her to regain her functional abilities and quality of life. The continuous advancements and innovations in surgical procedures at HMC reflect the commitment to providing world-class healthcare to patients in need.
