Qatar and Iran Strengthen Energy Relations

On October 19, 2026, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of Qatar Energy, met with Hamid Pour, the acting Minister of Oil in Iran, in Doha. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in the energy sector and deepening ties between the two neighboring nations.

This dialogue comes at a pivotal moment as both countries seek to bolster their energy portfolios amid global market fluctuations and regional dynamics. Al-Kaabi’s engagement with Pour signals Qatar’s commitment to exploring potential synergies, particularly concerning the shared North Field, known in Iran as the South Pars field.

Significance of the North Field

The North Field is the world’s largest gas field, discovered in 1971, with an estimated reserve of 900 trillion standard cubic feet. Spanning approximately 6,000 square kilometers, it presents a unique opportunity for both Qatar and Iran to maximize their natural gas output and enhance energy security. This collaboration could lead to increased investments and technology sharing that would benefit both economies.

Sharing the North Field, Qatar and Iran have parallel interests in developing its vast reserves. By fostering cooperation, they aim to optimize gas extraction and mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions in the region. Notably, this partnership could influence global LNG supplies, enhancing their competitive edge in international markets.

Recent Developments in Iranian Oil Ministry

Previous tensions between Qatar and Iran, particularly regarding energy production decisions, have been addressed by Qatari officials. In a statement released in June, Qatar denied any coordination with Iran on operational decisions affecting energy production, emphasizing its independent energy policies. This assertion serves to allay concerns that might arise from cooperative ventures following years of strained relations over the North Field.

Future Prospects for Energy Cooperation
