The Civil Service Bureau (CSB) has recently introduced new social media guidelines for government employees in Bahrain, emphasizing responsible use of online platforms. A key aspect of these guidelines is the prohibition against including job titles and contact information in personal social media profiles. However, if an employee is a public figure with a well-known position, they must include a disclaimer stating that their online activities and comments are personal and do not represent their government agency’s official stance. These guidelines, shared on the CSB’s Instagram account, aim to clarify acceptable online behavior for employees using platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

Employees are advised to engage in social media activities in a polite and factual manner, refraining from posting messages or articles that could potentially reflect negatively on their workplace, superiors, the government, or any other entity. Unacceptable behavior includes violating general standards of decency and conduct, engaging in rude or inappropriate behavior, acting unethically, or misusing one’s position to harm individuals or religious groups. The CSB has warned that appropriate action will be taken against any employee found misusing social media platforms.

The CSB’s new guidelines also stress the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between personal online identities and official government roles. By prohibiting the inclusion of job titles and contact information in personal profiles, the CSB aims to protect both individual employees and the government’s reputation. This measure aims to prevent the potential misuse of official information and prevent any confusion between personal opinions and official government stances. The updated guidelines reflect a proactive approach to managing the online presence of government employees, striving to balance personal expression with the need to uphold professional standards and safeguard sensitive information.

Overall, the CSB’s emphasis on responsible social media use underscores the significance of maintaining professionalism and integrity in online interactions. By establishing clear guidelines and expectations for government employees, the CSB seeks to uphold the reputation of both individual employees and the government as a whole. As online platforms continue to play a crucial role in communication and information sharing, these guidelines serve as a reminder for employees to exercise caution and discretion in their online activities. By adhering to these guidelines, government employees can contribute to a positive and respectful online environment while upholding the values and principles of their respective agencies.
