The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers recently held an emergency meeting in Kuwait where they emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic. They firmly rejected any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs and reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism, chaos, extremism, and incitement. The meeting, chaired by Abdullah Ali Al Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, also saw the participation of Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, and other high-ranking officials from Bahrain.

During the meeting, the council issued a statement calling for the respect of the diversity of the Syrian people and the cessation of bloodshed. They expressed strong support for efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and inclusive transitional process that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people for stability, development, and a dignified life. The Ministerial Council highlighted that the security and stability of Syria are crucial pillars of regional security and welcomed measures aimed at ensuring the safety of civilians, halting bloodshed, achieving national reconciliation, and preserving Syrian state institutions and resources.

The council also called for the resolution of militias and armed factions, advocating for the limitation of arms possession to state authorities. These steps are seen as essential for maintaining security and stability in Syria while restoring its regional role and international standing. The GCC Foreign Ministers urged all parties and components of the Syrian populace to unite, prioritize national interests, uphold national unity, and engage in an inclusive national dialogue to fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, stability, development, and prosperity. The meeting was significant in reaffirming the commitment of GCC countries to supporting Syria through a peaceful and inclusive process.
