France’s Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, is pushing for a firm approach to migration policy in line with the European Pact on Asylum and Migration and the Returns Directive. Retailleau, who is representing France in the Council of the European Union, is aligning himself with the conservative Republicans party and the far right in France. With a focus on protecting citizens from migratory shocks, Retailleau is calling for the rapid implementation of the European Pact on Asylum and Migration and a revision of the Returns Directive.

Following the parliamentary elections in France, the political landscape has shifted with no group obtaining an absolute majority. The Republicans, who now hold key offices in the government, are relying on the support of other parties to maintain their political survival. Retailleau’s tough stance on migration issues serves as a token to the French right and the far right, as he aims to assert his political identity within the coalition. His call for innovative solutions, including transferring migrants to centres outside the EU, reflects a shift towards a more radical approach to migration in Europe.

Retailleau’s focus on implementing the European Pact on Asylum and Migration and revising the Returns Directive comes at a time when the far right is gaining ground in several European countries. Germany, the Netherlands, and Hungary are taking measures to reform their asylum policies and tighten control over migration. Retailleau’s stance on migration is seen as a domestic political opportunity to carve out a national political stature for himself within the coalition government. Despite controversy over his comments on the rule of law, Retailleau has garnered respect from Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbàn.

In a rapidly changing political landscape, Retailleau’s firm policies on migration are reflective of the broader shift towards a more radical approach to migration in Europe. As the French Minister of the Interior, Retailleau’s focus on implementing the European Pact on Asylum and Migration and revising the Returns Directive aligns him with the conservative Republicans party and the far right in France. With the rise of the far right in several European countries, Retailleau’s stance on migration serves as a token to the French right and the far right, as he seeks to assert his political identity within the coalition government.

Retailleau’s call for innovative solutions, including transferring migrants to centres outside the EU, reflects a broader trend towards stricter migration policies across Europe. With Germany, the Netherlands, and Hungary all taking steps to reform their asylum policies and tighten control over migration, Retailleau’s stance on migration is in line with the political climate in Europe. Despite controversy over his comments on the rule of law, Retailleau has garnered respect from Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbàn, further solidifying his position within the European political landscape.
