Fashion Designer Based in Qatar Wins Award in Russia

Manjulakshmi Bharathan, a Qatar-based fashion designer, was recently honored for her modest designs and commitment to sustainability at the 15th KazanForum in Russia. The event, held from May 14 to 19, brought together industry professionals to discuss Islamic fashion and business opportunities. Manjulakshmi, also known as Gills Manjulakshmi, received the ‘Halal Business Woman’ award from Midhat Shagiakhmetov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Republic of Tatarstan. She was recognized for her innovative approach to business, promotion of high-quality halal products, and dedication to sustainability in the fashion industry.

During the forum, Manjulakshmi participated in a session on “Islamic Fashion: Motifs and Accessories”, where she discussed the importance of sustainability in Islamic fashion. She emphasized the need for businesses to promote awareness and ethical practices in their operations. Manjulakshmi co-founded Aadima, a women’s fashion brand in 2016, with the aim of providing modest luxury clothing that aligns with Islamic principles. Through her work, she hopes to inspire others to embrace sustainable fashion practices and make positive changes in the industry.

The Halal Business Woman award aims to recognize and celebrate women who have made significant contributions to the development of halal products and businesses. It highlights the entrepreneurial spirit, innovative approaches, and commitment to quality exhibited by female leaders in the industry. Manjulakshmi’s award-winning work reflects her dedication to promoting halal values and sustainability in the fashion business world. She credits her success to the support of her parents, family, and friends, and sees the award as a validation of her efforts to make a difference in the industry.

At the forum, Manjulakshmi had the opportunity to connect with designers from Tatarstan and Russia, discussing fashion culture, trends, and potential collaborations. She noted the similarities in the respect for modest fashion between the Middle East and regions like Tatarstan, where modest dressing is a norm. By engaging in conversations with industry peers, Manjulakshmi hopes to foster partnerships that will further promote sustainable and ethical practices in the fashion industry. She sees the award as a stepping stone towards greater recognition and impact in the global fashion community.
