The fifth annual medical conference of the Syrian Medical Association was recently held in Qatar, with a focus on celebrating Syria’s liberation and national victories. The event brought together Syrian doctors working in both the public and private sectors in Qatar, as well as diplomatic figures like Ambassador of Turkiye to Qatar H E Dr. Mustafa Goksu and representatives of embassies of friendly countries. The conference kicked off with verses from the holy Quran and a tribute to the martyrs of the Syrian revolution and medical personnel who sacrificed their lives in service. The attendees also heard about plans for an international medical conference to support the health sector in Syria, scheduled to take place in Doha in April.

The conference also shone a spotlight on two doctors who endured more than 15 years in prison during the Assad regime, sharing their harrowing stories of perseverance and suffering with the audience. These individuals were recognized for their courage and sacrifices, serving as inspiration for their dedication and loyalty to the cause. Additionally, Dr. Mohammed Salah Ibrahim, Assistant Secretary-General for Relief and International Development Affairs at the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), praised Qatar’s ongoing support for the Syrian people. Since 2011, QRCS has provided $160m worth of humanitarian aid to 13 million people affected by the Syrian crisis, including displaced individuals and refugees in various neighboring countries.

The QRCS has played a crucial role in providing support to those in need, including participation in recent relief aid programs like the air bridge initiated by the State of Qatar. This initiative aims to provide assistance to the Syrian population and address their humanitarian challenges, with a strong emphasis on promoting freedom and stability in Syria. The ongoing efforts of organizations like QRCS highlight the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in addressing complex humanitarian crises like the Syrian conflict. By supporting initiatives that prioritize the well-being and safety of affected populations, countries like Qatar are making significant contributions to alleviating the suffering of those impacted by ongoing conflicts and humanitarian challenges.

The conference served as a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences among medical professionals and stakeholders working to rebuild and develop the health system in Syria. By coming together to share knowledge and best practices, participants are actively contributing to the collective effort to improve healthcare services in the war-torn country. The event’s focus on recognizing the sacrifices of medical personnel and honoring their dedication underscores the importance of valuing and supporting those on the front lines of healthcare delivery, particularly in challenging environments like Syria.

As plans are underway for the upcoming international medical conference in April, anticipation is high for the opportunities it will provide to further advance healthcare initiatives in Syria. By bringing together experts and stakeholders from around the world, the conference has the potential to catalyze innovative solutions and partnerships that can make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the Syrian population. Through continued collaboration and support from entities like the QRCS and participating countries, the journey towards rebuilding and strengthening the health sector in Syria is well underway, offering hope for a brighter future for the nation and its people.
