Al-Khobar City in Saudi Arabia has recently been certified as a healthy city by the World Health Organization (WHO), after meeting and exceeding 80 criteria set by the organization. The accreditation certificate was officially received by the Emir of the Eastern Region, Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, and the Minister of Health, Fahd Al-Jalajel. The Healthy Cities Programme, under the Ministry of Health, is the first collaborating center with the WHO for healthy cities at the regional level and the fourth globally. This achievement highlights the city’s commitment to promoting health and well-being in the community.

Saudi Arabia is leading the way in the region with the largest number of accredited healthy cities, boasting a total of 16 such cities across various regions. The programme aims to enhance the quality of life, prioritize health in development projects, set targets for future health indicators, implement initiatives for sustainability, and reduce lifestyle-related chronic diseases. By focusing on these key areas, the goal is to improve the country’s standing in international health indicators, lower health risks and medical costs, and contribute to the overall well-being of society.

Dr. Al-Jalajel emphasized the importance of the WHO’s recognition of Al-Khobar as a healthy city, attributing this success to the support and interest of local authorities and various entities involved in the programme. These entities include the Eastern Province Emirate, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, the Ministry of Commerce, as well as other government and community organizations. The collaboration of these entities has been integral to the city’s achievement of the international accreditation.

One of the key factors contributing to Al-Khobar’s designation as a healthy city is its infrastructure, which includes parks and walking paths that promote physical activity and well-being. The city’s dedication to promoting health through schools and primary care centers has also played a significant role in meeting the WHO’s criteria for a healthy city. By focusing on these initiatives and programs, Al-Khobar has shown its commitment to creating a healthy and vibrant society for its residents.

The Healthy Cities Programme in Saudi Arabia is a testament to the country’s dedication to improving the health and well-being of its population. By implementing measures to address lifestyle-related chronic diseases, setting targets for future health indicators, and promoting sustainability, the programme aims to create a healthier and more prosperous society. With the support of local authorities and various government and community organizations, Saudi Arabia is making significant strides towards achieving its goal of becoming a leader in international health indicators.

In conclusion, the recognition of Al-Khobar as a healthy city by the World Health Organization is a significant achievement for Saudi Arabia. By meeting and exceeding the criteria set by the WHO, the city has demonstrated its commitment to promoting health and well-being in the community. With the support and collaboration of local authorities and various organizations, Al-Khobar is leading the way in creating a healthy and vibrant society. The Healthy Cities Programme in Saudi Arabia serves as a model for other countries looking to improve the health and well-being of their populations, and highlights the importance of prioritizing health in development projects.
