Indonesian Independence Day in Bahrain observed with flag-raising and cultural reception

The Embassy of Indonesia in the Kingdom of Bahrain marked the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence with an official flag-raising ceremony and cultural reception, reinforcing ties between the Indonesian community and local authorities. The Indonesian Independence Day in Bahrain event began at 7:00 a.m. local time at the embassy’s diplomatic compound in Al-Mahooz, with Ambassador Ardi Hermawan presiding.

Flag-raising ceremony and official attendance

The formal ceremony followed military-style protocols and featured a youth colour guard drawn from the Indonesian expatriate community. Ambassador Ardi Hermawan delivered opening remarks, thanking the hundreds of Indonesians who attended from diverse professions including healthcare, engineering and domestic services. The embassy said the presence of the community demonstrated strong cohesion and support for Indonesia’s cultural and public diplomacy efforts abroad.

Members of the embassy staff, the Dharma Wanita Persatuan women’s association and representatives of the broader diplomatic corps also took part in the proceedings. Participants observed a moment of reflection on Indonesia’s independence and the role of the diaspora in projecting national values overseas.

Community celebrations and cultural reception

Following the flag-raising, the embassy hosted a cultural reception that included traditional food, performances and awards for competition winners. The reception highlighted Indonesian customs and communal solidarity, with the serving of nasi tumpeng—a cone-shaped rice dish symbolizing gratitude and unity—at the centre of the celebration. Ambassador Hermawan offered portions of the nasi tumpeng to community leaders as recognition of their ongoing contributions.

Nasi Tumpeng tradition and community awards

The ceremony’s culinary tradition, nasi tumpeng, was presented in a public ritual that organisers said reinforces social bonds within the diaspora. The embassy also distributed prizes to winners of arts, sports and cultural contests held over the previous month, events supported by community members and local sponsors. These activities aimed to increase interaction among Indonesians in Bahrain and to promote cultural continuity.

Diplomatic context: strengthening bilateral and regional ties

Ambassador Ardi Hermawan framed the anniversary as more than a commemorative event, urging members of the Indonesian community to act as “people’s ambassadors” by exemplifying goodwill, unity and innovation. He cited Indonesia’s ongoing economic transformation and growing engagement with Gulf Cooperation Council states as context for the embassy’s outreach work.

Officials said the embassy’s cultural and community programming supports broader bilateral ties by showcasing Indonesia’s social capital and human resources. Furthermore, the embassy emphasised that a cohesive expatriate community can contribute to economic links, labour relations and people-to-people exchanges between Indonesia and Bahrain.

Impact on the Indonesian community and next steps

Organisers noted that the month-long schedule of sports, artistic and cultural events helped sustain momentum leading into the independence anniversary. According to embassy announcements, these programs were designed to build networks, recognise community achievements and provide platforms for youth engagement. The events also offered opportunities for small businesses and service providers within the diaspora to gain visibility.

Looking ahead, the embassy indicated plans to continue community programming throughout the coming year, with a focus on vocational training, cultural preservation and initiatives that support bilateral cooperation. Observers said such sustained engagement can help address practical needs—such as professional development and social support—while strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy in the Gulf region.

What to watch next

Readers should expect follow-up announcements from the embassy about targeted projects and partnerships that expand on the independence day activities. In the near term, the embassy plans to publish schedules for workshops and events aimed at youth and working professionals, according to event organisers. Additionally, stakeholders interested in cultural exchanges or sponsorship opportunities were invited to contact the embassy directly.

Overall, the Indonesian Independence Day in Bahrain observance underscored the role of expatriate communities in diplomatic outreach and highlighted practical steps for deepening ties between Indonesia and Bahrain over the coming year.
