The coral reef farm in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq, located in the North Al Batinah Governorate, is the largest artificial coral farm in the Middle East, covering an impressive area of 20km along the coastal line. With a width of 7km and a depth ranging from 15 to 30 meters, this farm is a thriving ecosystem for a variety of sea creatures. It is situated 4 miles off the beach and boasts a rich diversity of coral reefs, herbs, fish, and other marine life, making it an ideal environment for many sea creatures to thrive.

Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hadabi, Director General of the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in North Al Batinah Governorate, highlighted the significance of the coral reef farm in Al Suwaiq as one of the vital projects executed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. Opened in December 2019 at a cost of OMR2.6 million, the farm is closely monitored by the fisheries department to observe the formation of coral reefs and the sea creatures that inhabit them. As a result, the farm has contributed to an increase in the fisheries stock within the artificial reef area, enhancing marine biodiversity in the region.

Sultan bin Hassan Al Marzooqi, Director of the Fisheries Department, emphasized that the coral reef farm in Al Suwaiq provides an ideal environment for diving and entertainment, attracting visitors and researchers alike. The farm has played a key role in boosting the local fisheries stock and serves as a vital site for conducting research and studies on artificial reefs and marine life. The farm currently accommodates 4,280 artificial reef units placed at depths ranging from 15 to 20 meters, further enhancing the marine ecosystem and promoting conservation efforts in the area.

The coral reef farm in Al Suwaiq is not only a valuable asset for biodiversity conservation but also a popular attraction for divers and tourists seeking a unique underwater experience. The farm’s expansive size and rich marine life make it an ideal spot for diving enthusiasts to explore the diverse coral reefs and observe the vibrant aquatic ecosystem. Additionally, the farm offers a range of recreational opportunities for visitors looking to engage with nature and learn about marine conservation efforts.

The establishment of the coral reef farm in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq represents a significant milestone in promoting sustainable fisheries practices and preserving marine ecosystems in the region. By creating a conducive environment for sea creatures to thrive and enhancing the local fisheries stock, the farm contributes to the long-term conservation of marine biodiversity. The farm’s success in attracting visitors and researchers underscores its importance as a hub for environmental education and awareness, raising public consciousness about the need to protect our oceans and marine life.

In conclusion, the coral reef farm in Al Suwaiq stands as a testament to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources’ commitment to promoting marine conservation and sustainable fisheries management. With its vast expanse, diverse marine life, and research opportunities, the farm represents a valuable asset for the local community and a beacon of hope for marine conservation efforts in the Middle East. Visitors, researchers, and conservationists alike can find inspiration in the success of the Al Suwaiq coral reef farm, serving as a model for sustainable development and environmental stewardship in the region.
