Former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Chief of Investigations Richard Weber recently revealed the harsh conditions faced by Nigerian Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan during his imprisonment in the African country. Speaking on a podcast episode of Illicit Edge’s “Designated,” Weber described Gambaryan’s detainment at Kuje prison as unfavorable, with the crypto compliance chief being held alongside terrorists. Despite being a former law enforcement official working on resolving a compliance issue, Gambaryan has been in prison for over 200 days, drawing attention to his unjust detention.

According to Weber, Gambaryan is essentially a hostage, as he is being held in prison for a crime he did not commit. After traveling to Nigeria for policy talks related to digital assets, Gambaryan was promised safe passage in and out of the country before being arrested on tax evasion and money laundering charges. The vague reasons behind his arrest have led to questions about the legitimacy of the charges against him, with U.S. lawmaker French Hill referring to Gambaryan as a pawn in a Nigerian political dispute.

Since his imprisonment, Gambaryan’s health has deteriorated significantly. He has suffered from malaria and double pneumonia behind bars, and footage from a recent court hearing in Abuja shows him struggling to walk due to complications from a herniated disc. Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has been advocating for his release, highlighting the injustice and inhumanity he is facing in prison. Despite the challenging circumstances, she remains hopeful for his eventual release.

Weber’s plea to the U.S. government to intervene and secure Gambaryan’s release reflects the urgency of the situation. As a dedicated public servant and a father of two young children, Gambaryan’s detention has raised concerns about his well-being and the lack of clarity surrounding the charges against him. The international crypto community has been voicing support for Gambaryan’s release, emphasizing the need for justice and fair treatment for individuals involved in the cryptocurrency industry.

The ongoing situation involving Tigran Gambaryan serves as a sobering reminder of the risks and challenges faced by individuals working in the crypto sector. As the industry continues to evolve and expand, regulatory uncertainties and legal disputes can impact the lives of those involved. The case of Gambaryan highlights the importance of upholding human rights and due process, even in the context of emerging technologies like cryptocurrencies. By shedding light on his story, advocates hope to bring attention to his plight and secure his safe return to his family in California.

Ultimately, the case of Tigran Gambaryan underscores the complexities of navigating the intersection of law enforcement, regulatory compliance, and international politics in the crypto industry. As efforts to secure his release continue, the broader implications of his detainment raise important questions about accountability, transparency, and the protection of individuals working in the digital assets space. With support from the global crypto community and advocacy from his loved ones, Gambaryan’s case highlights the need for safeguards to ensure the rights and well-being of individuals involved in the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrencies.
