Microsoft and G42, an artificial intelligence company based in the United Arab Emirates, have announced plans to open two centres in Abu Dhabi dedicated to “responsible” AI initiatives. The UAE has been making significant investments in AI, led by the government-backed firm G42, in an effort to become a global leader in the field and diversify its economy away from oil. This partnership between Microsoft and G42 builds on a previous agreement where Microsoft committed to investing $1.5 billion in the Emirati firm.

The first centre will focus on bringing together academic researchers and AI practitioners from the private sector to collaborate on responsible AI initiatives and share best practices. The second centre will concentrate on developing large language models for “underrepresented languages”, which are computer programs that use vast amounts of text to generate responses to queries. Both centres aim to ensure that generative AI models and applications are developed, deployed, and used safely.

G42, which counts Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala and U.S. private equity firm Silver Lake among its stakeholders, has emphasized its commitment to responsible AI practices. The chairman of G42, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who also serves as the UAE’s national security advisor and is the president’s brother, has reassured both the U.S. and UAE governments about the security of the Microsoft partnership. G42 has also stated that it does not conduct business with entities listed on the U.S. government’s restricted parties list.

The AI centres in Abu Dhabi aim to promote collaboration between academia and the private sector to advance responsible AI practices and develop innovative solutions. By focusing on underrepresented languages and developing large language models, the centres will contribute to the growth and adoption of AI technologies in the region. Microsoft and G42’s partnership underscores the UAE’s commitment to becoming a global hub for AI research and innovation, while also ensuring ethical and safe use of AI technologies.

This collaboration between Microsoft and G42 reflects the UAE’s broader strategy to invest in AI and technology as part of its economic diversification efforts. By leveraging the expertise and resources of both companies, the AI centres in Abu Dhabi will play a key role in advancing the development and deployment of AI technologies in a responsible and ethical manner. The partnership also highlights the importance of international cooperation in the field of AI to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.

As the world embraces AI technologies, it is crucial for stakeholders to prioritize responsible AI practices to ensure the ethical use of these powerful tools. The AI centres established by Microsoft and G42 in Abu Dhabi will serve as a model for collaboration, innovation, and best practices in the field of AI. By investing in responsible AI initiatives, the UAE is positioning itself as a leader in the development of AI technologies that benefit society while also prioritizing ethical considerations and security concerns. The partnership between Microsoft and G42 marks a significant step towards achieving these goals and advancing the responsible use of AI technologies globally.
