Telegram, the popular messaging platform, has recently updated its policy to allow users to flag illegal content in private chats for moderator review. This change comes following the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France, where he faces allegations of permitting criminal activity on the platform. Previously, Telegram’s FAQ page stated that private chats were secure and protected from moderation. However, within the last 24 hours, this language has been removed, and users can now report illegal content using the ‘Report’ button in the app. This shift marks a turning point for Telegram, known for its hands-off approach to content moderation.

French authorities charged Durov with failing to cooperate with investigations into criminal activities like child exploitation and drug trafficking on the platform. In response to these challenges, Durov acknowledged the issues faced by Telegram due to its rapid growth, reaching a user base of 950 million. He expressed his commitment to improving content moderation on the platform to prevent abusers from interfering with the user experience. The recent policy update and Durov’s public statement reflect Telegram’s efforts to address concerns regarding illegal activities occurring on the platform.

In addition to these developments, Telegram-linked blockchain The Open Network (TON) has surpassed 1 billion total transactions following a high-profile memecoin airdrop. The network’s transaction volume has exceeded 1.04 billion, with significant growth in the past three months. Recent developments, such as the introduction of the W5 smart wallet standard and partnerships with Tonkeeper, 1inch, and Sign, have contributed to TON’s continued growth. By aligning with the Web3 startup accelerator Triangle, Telegram has further expanded its presence in the blockchain space and digital asset industry.

As of the close of 2023, Telegram held $400 million in digital assets and witnessed a rise in premium users from four million to over five million by mid-2024. Despite generating $342.5 million in revenue, the platform posted an operating loss of $108 million for the year. Notably, 40% of the revenue came from digital asset-related activities, such as an integrated wallet feature and the sale of digital collectibles. These financial insights shed light on Telegram’s diversification efforts and revenue streams beyond messaging services.

The policy update allowing users to report illegal content in private chats reflects Telegram’s commitment to enhancing content moderation and addressing concerns about criminal activities on the platform. This shift follows the arrest of CEO Pavel Durov in France, where he faces allegations related to permitting illegal activities on Telegram. With a user base of 950 million and growing, Telegram aims to ensure a safe and secure environment for its users by implementing stricter moderation policies. The recent developments on the Telegram blockchain, TON, highlight the platform’s continued growth and expansion in the digital asset industry.

In conclusion, Telegram’s updated policy and commitment to improving content moderation demonstrate the platform’s responsiveness to challenges related to illegal activities. The 1 billion total transactions milestone on TON showcases the network’s robust ecosystem and the success of recent developments in the blockchain space. With a focus on enhancing user experience and security, Telegram is poised to strengthen its position in the messaging and digital asset industries. By addressing concerns about illicit content and expanding its blockchain presence, Telegram is paving the way for a more secure and transparent platform for its millions of users worldwide.
