The Saudi Film Commission recently launched the ‘Film Deposit’ initiative through the National Film Archive, which is dedicated to collecting and archiving Saudi films to preserve them for future generations. The initiative aims to gather films from various sources and securely deposit them at a designated headquarters to document Saudi Arabia’s cinematic history and capture its cultural and artistic dimensions. The commission has established the Saudi Film Registry, which contains data on over 1,000 films, including feature films and documentaries, to set high standards and guidelines for film deposits.

The ‘Film Deposit’ initiative ensures the preservation and representation of national cultural heritage through three paths: deposit for secure storage, deposit with research access for scholarly study, and deposit with public availability for general access. These accessibility paths are designed to encourage interest among researchers, cinema enthusiasts, and the general public. The initiative marks a significant step for the commission in enhancing access to films that constitute landmarks in local cinematic history and expands the appreciation of the Kingdom’s vast artistic and cultural heritage.

The establishment of the Saudi Film Registry by the commission is a significant milestone, as it contains data on over 1,000 films, including feature films and documentaries, setting the highest standards and guidelines for film deposits. This ensures that intellectual and literary property rights align with the submitting entities, maintaining high standards in the preservation and archiving of Saudi films. The initiative provides researchers, cinema enthusiasts, and the general public with access to Saudi films through secure storage, research access, and public availability, encouraging interest and appreciation of the Kingdom’s cinematic history.
