The Ministry of Information in Oman has recently announced the enactment of Royal Decree (No. 58/2024), which introduces the new Media Law. This law reflects the commitment of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to strengthen the role of Oman’s media and journalists in the country. Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Harrasi, the Minister of Information, emphasized that the new law is in line with Oman Vision 2040 and takes into account the evolving landscape of media and the influence of digital technologies. The law aims to support the mission of Oman’s media by promoting objectivity, accuracy, neutrality, and freedom of expression, while upholding the country’s laws and values of citizenship and national pride.

The new Media Law also focuses on safeguarding the rights of journalists, regulating the media profession, setting standards for media activities, and providing guidelines for engaging with artistic works and publications. Dr. Al-Harrasi expressed confidence in the positive impact of the law, stating that it will elevate Omani media to new heights and usher in a new era that aligns with the country’s goals and vision for progress. The new law is expected to support Oman’s national and cultural mission, reinforcing its commitment to excellence and innovation in the media sector.

By emphasizing principles such as objectivity, accuracy, and freedom of expression, the new Media Law aims to create a more transparent and responsible media environment in Oman. The law underscores the importance of upholding ethical standards in journalism and ensuring that media professionals adhere to best practices in their reporting. With a focus on promoting neutrality and fairness, the law seeks to enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of Oman’s media industry, ultimately serving the interests of the public and contributing to the country’s development.

In addition to regulating the media profession and setting standards for media activities, the new law also addresses the role of journalists in society and the importance of their rights and freedoms. By outlining mechanisms for engaging with artistic works and publications, the law seeks to promote cultural diversity and creativity in Oman’s media landscape. By supporting the rights and freedoms of journalists, the new law aims to empower media professionals to fulfill their essential role in informing and engaging the public, while also promoting diversity and inclusivity in the media sector.

Overall, the enactment of the new Media Law in Oman represents a significant step towards promoting a more open, transparent, and accountable media environment in the country. By upholding principles of objectivity, accuracy, and freedom of expression, the law aims to enhance the quality and credibility of Oman’s media industry, while also supporting the rights and freedoms of journalists. The law is expected to propel the country’s media sector to new heights, enabling it to play a more constructive and influential role in shaping public discourse and contributing to Oman’s development and progress.
