The Media Majlis Museum at Northwestern University in Qatar has recently opened a new exhibition focusing on the complexities and evolving influence of the Arabic language. Titled ‘The limits of my language are the limits of my world,’ the exhibition explores four main themes that aim to engage the audience. Curated by Amal Zeyad Ali, a cultural producer and Northwestern Qatar alumna, the exhibition will be open to the public until December 5.

The exhibition delves into the complexities of the Arabic language, its impact, and its future. It also sheds light on the challenges faced by Arabic media in comparison to other languages, especially in the digital age where English dominates. Marwan M Kraidy, Dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar, emphasized the importance of the exhibition in celebrating the richness of the Arabic cultural heritage and sparking meaningful dialogue regarding its future. He stated that the exhibition aligns seamlessly with the academic mission of Northwestern Qatar.

‘The limits of my language are the limits of my world’ is the eighth exhibition to be hosted at the Media Majlis Museum. It aligns with the museum’s mission of using art, media, and technology to explore how the Arabic language is represented today, its historical significance, and its future. Alfredo Cramerotti, the director of the museum, expressed the significance of celebrating the Arabic language as a vital element of Arab identity. He praised the beauty, poetry, and richness of the language, emphasizing its multi-layered nature.

Amal Zeyad Ali, the curator of the exhibition, discussed her inspiration behind creating an exhibition centered on the complexities of the Arabic language. As a graduate of Northwestern Qatar with a major in Communications and a passion for museums, she highlighted the importance of language in media, whether it is signed, written, or spoken. Amal emphasized that the exhibition is not only for Arabic speakers but also for non-speakers to understand the influence of the language on them.

The exhibition features commissioned artworks from renowned artists, poets, and social media influencers. Artists such as Simon Mortimer, Hala Amer, Karim Jabbari, Zainab Alsabba, and Hussein Alazaat have contributed to the exhibition. Poets like Salwa Sadek and Dana Dajani, as well as social media influencers such as Salam Katanani, Qasem Elhato, Hebah Nigm, and Cynthia Abou Khalil, have also played a role in the exhibition. Additionally, the exhibition includes digital content from Al Jazeera, BBC Arabic, and Al Araby TV, showcasing animations, comedy skits, music videos, news reports, and talk shows.

Overall, the exhibition at the Media Majlis Museum offers a unique and engaging exploration of the Arabic language, its complexity, and its impact on diverse audiences. Through a combination of art, media, and technology, the exhibition celebrates the richness of the Arabic cultural heritage while sparking meaningful dialogue about the language’s future. Visitors, both Arabic speakers and non-speakers, are invited to delve into the multi-layered nature of the Arabic language and its enduring influence in the digital age.
