India has emerged as the world’s largest importer of Russian oil, surpassing China in July. Russian crude made up 44 per cent of India’s overall imports last month, reaching a record level of 2.07 million barrels per day. This increase in imports from Russia is primarily due to Indian refiners taking advantage of discounted prices following sanctions imposed by Western nations in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As long as there are no further sanctions, India’s demand for Russian oil is expected to continue to rise.

Since Russia’s conflict with Ukraine began in February 2022, India’s trade with Russia has intensified, particularly in the oil and fertilizer sectors. This increase in trade has helped stabilize global prices and control inflation. India’s rising purchases of Russian oil have also led to a shift in the flow of Russian ESPO Blend crude from traditional Chinese buyers to South Asia. ESPO imports to India surged in July, reaching 188,000 barrels per day as larger Suezmax vessels were utilized for transportation.

In contrast to India’s growing imports from Russia, Chinese refiners bought less Russian oil in July due to lower profit margins from producing fuels. India’s increase in Russian oil imports has led to changes in the dynamics of crude oil suppliers to India, with Iraq retaining its position as the second-largest oil supplier to India, followed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. India’s crude purchases from the Middle East also rose by 4 per cent in July, accounting for 40 per cent of India’s overall mix.

The strategic shift towards increasing imports of Russian oil by India comes at a time when the global energy landscape is undergoing significant changes. With Western countries reducing their dependence on Russian energy sources, countries like India are stepping in to fill the gap. The boost in oil imports from Russia has allowed Indian refiners to access oil at discounted prices, thereby benefiting from the geopolitical situation between Russia and its Western counterparts.

As the largest importer of Russian oil, India’s reliance on Russian energy sources is expected to remain strong in the near future. This shift in oil imports highlights the growing importance of India as a key player in the global energy market. By diversifying its sources of crude oil and taking advantage of discounted prices, India is positioning itself strategically to ensure energy security and meet the needs of its growing economy. The increase in Russian oil imports signals a shift in the traditional crude oil trade routes, with Indian refiners becoming key players in the global energy landscape.
