Supporting Children with Autism as the School Year Begins

The start of the school year can be a challenging transition for many children, particularly those with autism. Due to changes in routine, new sensory experiences, and varying social demands, children with autism may face heightened difficulties during this time. Experts emphasize that gradual preparation and a clear daily routine can significantly ease this process for these children and their families.

Dr. Hanadi Al-Mutairi, a developmental pediatrician at Sidra Medicine in Qatar, highlights the importance of gradually adjusting routines to meet the needs of each child. She notes, “Routines provide a sense of comfort and stability for many children with autism.” Establishing consistent sleep schedules and breaking down morning tasks into manageable steps can enhance familiarity and lessen stress.

Addressing Sensory Needs at School

According to Amani Suhail, an autism specialist at Renad Academy, preparing children for school extends beyond academic schedules. It includes addressing their sensory sensitivities in the school environment. She explains that the school setting can overwhelm children with various sensory inputs such as noise, bright lights, strong odors, and certain fabric textures. Families are encouraged to observe their child’s reactions to these stimuli and coordinate with schools to ensure appropriate support measures are in place.

Support frameworks may include noise-canceling headphones, sensory tools, movement breaks, quiet areas for retreat, and adequate transition times between activities. Suhail stresses that cooperation between home and school can significantly influence the child’s experience, highlighting the need for ongoing dialogue regarding behavioral observations and classroom necessities.

When Behavior Speaks Volumes

Behavior can often signal emotional distress for children struggling to express their feelings verbally. Dr. Al-Mutairi mentions signs of stress, such as increased irritability, meltdowns, withdrawal, changes in sleep patterns or appetite, and heightened sensitivity to sensory inputs. Some children might also experience physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, or struggle significantly with separation from caregivers. In such instances, a child may appear to manage well throughout the school day but become overly agitated upon returning home.

Families should interpret these behavioral shifts as valuable communication signals requiring attention, according to Dr. Al-Mutairi. Rather than focusing solely on correcting the behavior, she recommends asking, “What is our child trying to communicate?” This shift in mindset can help parents better understand their child’s unique needs.

Adaptation Takes Time and Patience

Adapting to the new school year may take time, Suhail advises, urging families to exercise patience with both themselves and their children. She notes, “Returning to school is a transition for the whole family, so be forgiving of unexpected reactions or challenging mornings. Tackle each day individually, make adjustments as necessary, seek support, and celebrate every child’s progress.” She emphasizes that the ultimate objective is to enable children with autism to thrive in a supportive and understanding environment, fostering their readiness to learn.

Looking ahead, experts recommend continuous collaboration between home and school to refine support strategies, ensuring children feel secure and understood. As the academic year progresses, it will be crucial to observe and react to evolving needs, enhancing each child’s experience and overall well-being in the learning environment.
