Amina Arfi Becomes Youngest Squash Player to Top World Rankings
Amina Arfi, an Egyptian squash player, has etched her name in history by becoming the youngest female athlete to reach the pinnacle of the world rankings at just 19 years and two months old. This significant achievement surpasses a record that has stood for over four decades, marking a remarkable season during which she claimed both the World Championship and the top spot in the rankings.
Arfi ascended to the number one position in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) rankings following her victory at the Qatar Classic in Doha, where she triumphed over compatriot Hania El Hammamy, the then reigning world number one, with a thrilling 3-2 match that lasted 107 minutes.
Breaking Long-Standing Records
With her latest win, Arfi has broken the long-standing record held by New Zealander Susan Devoy, who achieved a similar feat at the age of 20 years and two months in 1984. This new milestone sets Arfi apart as the youngest player to ever lead the women’s world ranking since its inception.
Entering the final of the Qatar Classic, Arfi understood that winning would also mean taking the world number one title from El Hammamy, who had held the top position for the previous 11 months. Despite a shaky start where El Hammamy won the first game 11-7, Arfi rallied to claim the next two games (11-7, 11-8) before El Hammamy leveled the match by winning the fourth game 11-7. The fifth and final game was a nail-biter, ending with Arfi victorious at 12-10, thereby securing both the championship and the top ranking.

This victory marks Arfi’s first Qatar Classic title and adds to her impressive tally of 15 professional titles, including her inaugural platinum category championship.
