Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) will be hosting a literary conversation on October 23, 2024, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hisham Matar in dialogue with acclaimed novelist Kamila Shamsie. The event, part of the university’s Qalam series, will take place at 6.30pm in the GU-Q auditorium, welcoming the public to attend.

Hisham Matar, a celebrated Libyan-British author, is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, The Return, named one of the New York Times 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. His debut novel, In the Country of Men, was shortlisted for the 2006 Booker Prize. His latest work, My Friends, delves into themes of exile and human connection, earning critical acclaim with awards like the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction and recognition as a National Book Award finalist.

Kamila Shamsie, GU-Q’s inaugural Writer-in-Residence, will lead the discussion with Matar, exploring his literary journey and the broader themes in his work. Shamsie, known for works like Burnt Shadows and Home Fire, brings her own expertise as an acclaimed novelist to the conversation, enriching the dialogue with her insights and perspectives.

Dean Safwan Masri of GU-Q emphasized the importance of this event, highlighting the shared experiences of Matar and Shamsie as storytellers. Their dialogue promises to offer a deeply engaging exploration of themes surrounding the search for home, whether it be in a literal or metaphorical sense. The event is expected to resonate with a wide audience, captivating those who have grappled with similar themes in their own lives.

The Qalam series at GU-Q aims to bring together acclaimed authors and literary figures to engage in meaningful conversations and discussions. By hosting events like the upcoming dialogue between Hisham Matar and Kamila Shamsie, the university provides a platform for intellectual exploration and cultural exchange within the community. Attendees can look forward to an evening of insightful conversation and reflection on the power of storytelling and its ability to connect individuals across borders and experiences.

Overall, the literary conversation featuring Hisham Matar and Kamila Shamsie at GU-Q promises to be a thought-provoking and enriching event for both the campus community and the public. With two acclaimed authors coming together to discuss their work and the broader themes of exile, human connection, and the search for home, attendees can expect a lively and engaging dialogue that delves into the power of storytelling to unite individuals and transcend boundaries.
