The Middle East Green Initiative, led by Saudi Arabia, aims to plant 50 billion trees and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 670 million tons in the region. This initiative is set to improve air quality, prevent soil erosion, provide wildlife habitats, and help mitigate climate change. The Ministerial Council for the Middle East Green Initiative will hold its first meeting in Jeddah under the leadership of Abdulrahman Al-Fadley, Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture. This meeting will focus on making key decisions to launch the execution phase of the initiative and prepare for the establishment of its General Secretariat in Riyadh.

This meeting marks a significant milestone in regional efforts to implement the foundational phase of the Middle East Green Initiative. By planting 50 billion trees across the Middle East, the initiative aims to contribute 5% of the global reforestation goal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 670 million tons, which will account for 10% of global efforts. This ambitious goal will help build a greener future for the Middle East and make a positive impact on the environment.

The Middle East Green Initiative was first introduced at the inaugural summit in Riyadh in October 2021. During the second summit in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022, Saudi Arabia announced a financial grant for the initiative and confirmed that the General Secretariat would be hosted in Riyadh. The Kingdom has also pledged to cover all operational costs for the next ten years, demonstrating its commitment to the success of the initiative and the wellbeing of the region’s environment.

By hosting the General Secretariat in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is taking a leading role in the implementation of the Middle East Green Initiative. The council is expected to make key decisions during the meeting in Jeddah to launch the execution phase of the initiative, ensuring that it progresses towards its goals of planting 50 billion trees and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 670 million tons. These efforts will contribute to global reforestation and climate change mitigation efforts, benefiting not only the Middle East but the entire planet.
