After the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy launched the “Grain from Ukraine” humanitarian programme to assist in stabilizing the situation in the country. The programme aims to restore diplomatic relations with Syria and collaborate with the new HTS-led Syrian government in Damascus. Zelenskyy explained that Ukraine will work with European and US partners to ensure strong support for Syria, which will contribute to more stability and peace in the Middle East, leading to increased trade opportunities for all parties involved. Additionally, Ukraine plans to double trade with Lebanon this year as part of their efforts in the region.

As part of the “Grain from Ukraine” programme, Ukraine has already sent 500 tonnes of wheat flour to Syria and delivered over 221,000 tonnes of agricultural products to countries across Africa and Asia since the programme’s launch in 2022. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s contribution to restoring stability in Syria after years of Russian interference, stating that it would be the right step to restore diplomatic relations and economic cooperation with Syria. He expressed hope that the post-al-Assad Syria would respect international law, which al-Assad failed to do during his regime.

Ukraine is a major global producer and exporter of grains and oilseeds and aims to restore relations with Syria following the ousting of the al-Assad regime by rebels. While Kyiv traditionally exported agricultural goods to the Middle East, it did not export to Syria, which imported food from Russia during the al-Assad era. Moscow, a staunch ally of al-Assad, granted him political asylum after he fled Syria in December. Zelenskyy’s efforts to support Syria through the “Grain from Ukraine” programme demonstrate Ukraine’s commitment to offering humanitarian assistance and collaborating with the new Syrian government to promote stability and peace in the region.

The “Grain from Ukraine” initiative reflects Ukraine’s broader foreign policy goals of promoting peace and stability in the Middle East through economic and diplomatic partnerships. By providing grain and agricultural products to Syria, Ukraine not only supports the country in its recovery from conflict but also enhances its own trade relations in the region. Zelenskyy’s emphasis on restoring diplomatic relations with Syria underscores Ukraine’s commitment to engaging with nations in conflict and working towards peaceful resolutions that benefit all parties involved. As Ukraine doubles its trade with Lebanon and seeks to strengthen ties with other countries in the region, the “Grain from Ukraine” programme serves as a model for how humanitarian aid can be used to foster international cooperation and stability.

Overall, Ukraine’s “Grain from Ukraine” humanitarian programme reflects a strategic approach to foreign policy that prioritizes peace, stability, and cooperation in conflict-affected regions. By supporting Syria with grain and agricultural products, Ukraine aims to contribute to the country’s recovery and promote diplomatic relations with the new government in Damascus. Through partnerships with European and US allies, Ukraine seeks to ensure strong support for Syria, which will ultimately benefit all parties involved by fostering stability, peace, and trade opportunities in the Middle East. As Ukraine continues to expand its trade relations in the region and engage in diplomatic efforts to restore stability, the “Grain from Ukraine” programme highlights the country’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and international collaboration for the greater good.
