Political groups in the European Parliament have selected the policy areas they are interested in leading, prompting national parties to put forward names to coordinate the committees. The Parliament’s political families reached a provisional agreement on the distribution of committee chairmanships, with the EPP and socialists eyeing key posts. Committees play a crucial role in drafting legislative proposals, conducting hearings with experts, and scrutinizing other EU institutions. The EPP, the largest group in the Parliament, has secured control of six committees, including Foreign Affairs and Civil Liberties. The Socialists and Democrats group aims to chair committees like Environment and Economic Affairs. The far-right group, Patriots for Europe, has claimed the Transport and Tourism and Culture and Education committees.

The EPP has utilized the d’Hondt proportional representation system to allocate committee chairs within the party, with Germany having the first choice. The Socialists and Democrats group is targeting significant committees like Environment and Public Health. The far-right group, Patriots for Europe, has claimed committees like Transport and Tourism. The European Conservatives and Reformists group are expected to win the chairmanship of the budget committee. Renew Europe, the EU liberals, have chosen to lead the Development and Legal Affairs committees, as well as the subcommittee on Security and Defense. The Greens/EFA group has lined up candidates to chair committees like Internal Market and Consumer Protection.

The Left, a group composed of 46 MEPs, is seeking to control the Taxation Subcommittee and the Employment and Social Affairs Committee. Finnish MEP Li Andersson is a candidate for the chairmanship of the EMPL committee. The committees are crucial for shaping Parliament’s positions on legislative proposals, organizing hearings with experts, and scrutinizing other EU institutions.
