Netherlands’ forward Wout Weghorst played a crucial role in his team’s victory against Turkiye in the Euro 2024 quarter-final. Despite being behind in the first half, Weghorst’s appearance off the bench turned the game around for the Dutch team. The burly striker, who previously made headlines with a stunning performance in the 2022 World Cup, once again proved his worth with a well-taken goal against Poland and a strong performance against Turkiye. His physical presence in the box provided the Netherlands with a much-needed target to aim for, creating chaos for the opposition’s defense.

Weghorst’s impact was evident as the Turkish defense struggled to contain him, leading to the Netherlands’ equalizer and the own goal that followed shortly after. Dutch defender Nathan Ake praised Weghorst for being a nightmare to play against, highlighting his strength, work rate, and ability to fight for every ball. Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo, who leads the squad for goals in the competition, also acknowledged Weghorst’s contribution off the bench, emphasizing his aerial prowess and ability to challenge in the box.

As the Netherlands prepare to face England in the semi-finals, Weghorst will be looking to make an impact against a team where he has previously struggled to find success in the English Premier League. Despite his challenges at Burnley and Manchester United, Weghorst’s unique qualities make him a valuable option for Ronald Koeman as a plan B. The Dutch coach has praised Weghorst for his “English qualities” and may consider utilizing him as a key player in critical moments, as they strive for their first Euros title since 1988.

Looking ahead to the semi-final clash with England, Weghorst’s performance against Turkiye has put him in a strong position to play a significant role in the upcoming match. His ability to change the game as a substitute has been crucial for the Dutch team throughout the tournament. With his physicality, aerial threat, and determination, Weghorst adds a dynamic dimension to the Netherlands’ attacking options, providing a different approach when needed. As they aim for a spot in the Euro 2024 final, Weghorst’s presence could make a difference against tough opposition like England.
