Extreme heat is contributing to the alarming incidents of vehicles catching fire, prompting the need for proactive measures to protect cars and bikes. As temperatures soar above 50 degrees Celsius, social media is flooded with videos of vehicles engulfed in flames. Fire and automobile experts emphasize the importance of understanding the risks and taking preventive measures to minimize the chances of accidental combustion.

Sam Malins, Group CEO of Reaction Fire Suppression, points out that poor maintenance is the primary cause of vehicle fires. Neglected engine compartments elevate the risk of fires, making it crucial for motorists to service their vehicles before summer peaks. Regular checks, including recalls from the manufacturer, are recommended to ensure vehicle safety. Malins advises installing automatic fire suppression systems as an additional safety measure to quickly detect and suppress fires.

To prevent vehicle fires, motorists should conduct regular maintenance checks, monitor fluid levels, and ensure the fuel tank cap is tightly closed. Sony Rajappan, a motoring expert, suggests keeping a fire extinguisher and first aid box in the vehicle, turning off the engine when refueling, and refraining from smoking near a heated car. Engine overheating due to high temperatures can strain the engine, causing it to overheat and potentially ignite, emphasizing the need for precautionary measures.

It is essential for drivers to stay alert to changes in their vehicle’s performance, such as unusual sounds, smoke from the tailpipe, or backfiring exhaust, which could indicate potential problems with the engine. Malins advises against throwing cigarette butts recklessly and recommends keeping an eye on fluid leaks, cracked hoses, or wiring issues. Act swiftly and calmly if a fire erupts in the vehicle by pulling over safely, evacuating everyone, and alerting emergency services while keeping a safe distance from the vehicle.

Comprehensive insurance coverage typically includes protection against non-collision incidents like fire damage due to extreme heat. Anas Mistareehi, CEO of eSanad, notes that fire damage caused by environmental factors is covered under comprehensive insurance, but policyholders should review their policies for specific terms, conditions, and coverage limits. Insurance companies may appoint a loss adjuster to investigate the cause of the fire if it is unclear, ensuring a detailed report is produced for accurate claim assessment.

In conclusion, preventing vehicle fires during extreme heat conditions requires proactive maintenance, regular inspections, and the installation of safety equipment like fire extinguishers and automatic suppression systems. Motorists should stay vigilant, act swiftly in case of a fire, and adhere to safety guidelines to minimize risks. Comprehensive insurance coverage provides financial protection against fire damage, but policyholders must review their policies to understand the extent of coverage and any limitations related to environmental events like extreme heat. By taking these preventive measures and staying informed, drivers can reduce the likelihood of vehicle fires and ensure their safety on the road.
