Philippine Ambassador Alfonso Ferdinand A. Ver and community leaders in the UAE are urging Filipinos to avoid spreading fake news, particularly regarding recent social media posts claiming that more than 160 Filipinos tested positive for HIV in the first six months of 2024. The ambassador emphasizes the importance of confirming news from official sources before sharing it, as the UAE government is strict in combatting fake news. Penalties for spreading fake news in the UAE can range from Dh100,000 to Dh200,000, along with imprisonment ranging from one to two years.

The fake news in question was shared on platforms like TikTok and Facebook, claiming that 166 Filipino workers in the UAE were diagnosed with HIV from January to May of this year. The post specifically mentioned Satwa, Dubai, raising concerns among the Filipino community in the area. However, the report was actually from August 2011 and referred to HIV cases among migrant Filipino workers in the UAE from January to July of that year. The post was poorly altered, changing the date from July to May to mislead readers.

“We urge everyone to exercise caution and discretion when sharing outdated articles, especially on sensitive topics like health,” stated Filipino community leader Josie Conlu. Community leaders like Ericson Reyes from the Filipino Social Club emphasized that there is no current evidence or report supporting the claims made in the fake news. They also stress that the UAE has strict regulations against spreading rumors and fake news, with severe consequences for violators. The community leaders remain committed to providing accurate information and support to individuals with questions or concerns.

It is essential to verify information before passing it on, especially when it comes to critical issues like health. The spread of outdated or misleading content can inadvertently harm or discriminate against individuals. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible sharing on social media platforms. The Filipino community in the UAE is encouraged to reach out to community leaders for accurate information and support instead of relying on unverified sources. The leaders are dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of their community and ensuring accurate information reaches the members.

The misinformation regarding HIV cases among Filipino workers in the UAE is baseless and harmful to the community. As such, it is crucial to be cautious when sharing information and ensure its accuracy. The community leaders underscore the importance of acting responsibly and thoughtfully to prevent the spread of misleading content. Any concerns or questions should be directed to trusted sources to avoid the dissemination of false information. By staying vigilant and verifying news from official sources, the Filipino community can protect themselves from falling victim to fake news that can cause unnecessary panic or confusion.
