Forbes recently released its inaugural list titled “The Middle East’s Fashion Innovators,” highlighting 40 of the region’s most influential fashion designers. Among them were two Qatari female designers, Ghada Al Subaey and Wadha Al Hajri, who have made significant contributions to the global fashion industry by incorporating Arab heritage and culture into their unique designs.

Ghada Al Subaey, the founder of 1309 Studios, is known for her minimalist ready-to-wear brand that features abayas, diverse clothing, kaftans, and accessories. In addition to her fashion brand, she also established The Cutting Studio, a fashion consulting and garment production studio in Qatar that supports emerging designers. Al Subaey’s commitment to supporting new designers is evident through her mentorship program at The Cutting Studio, located at the M7 Arts Center in Doha.

In an interview with Forbes, Al Subaey shared her philosophy on success, emphasizing the importance of continual learning and growth in the fashion industry. As the sole founder and CEO of 1309 Studio, she focuses on developing ready-to-wear women’s lifestyle products for contemporary, modest women. Al Subaey’s journey in the fashion industry reflects her dedication and passion for supporting emerging designers and creating unique designs that resonate with her audience.

Wadha Al Hajri, on the other hand, established her women’s ready-to-wear label, ‘Wadha,’ in 2010 and gained significant attention for her collection showcased at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. Her designs, deeply inspired by Islamic art and architecture, feature geometric hand embroideries and latticework that reflect her Qatari heritage. Al Hajri has expanded her brand to include ‘House of Wadha,’ an artistic living space in Msheireb, Doha, as well as ‘Wadha Fragrances’ and ‘Wadha Bags,’ adding luxury perfumes and women’s bags to her repertoire.

Forbes’ recognition of Ghada Al Subaey and Wadha Al Hajri not only highlights their impact on the fashion industry but also serves as an inspiration for young women in Qatar and the broader Middle East. These designers exemplify the significant role that women play in the Qatari community and showcase the importance of dedication and innovation in pursuing one’s dreams. With their unique designs and commitment to supporting emerging designers, Al Subaey and Al Hajri continue to make waves in the global fashion scene.
