A high-profile crypto fraud case in South Korea has implicated two police officers, a superintendent, and a lieutenant from the Gwangju District Court. The case revolves around an alleged crypto fraudster named Tak, who is accused of running an art-themed altcoin scam and duping victims of approximately $2.1 million worth of fiat and crypto. Tak is accused of operating a fake Ethereum and NFT-related project and convincing citizens to invest in a bogus crypto company. When authorities began investigating Tak, he hired a broker named Seong, who allegedly paid cash bribes to the superintendent to secure a promotion for the lieutenant.
Prosecutors claim that Seong paid the superintendent over $7,300 in cash bribes on two occasions to promote the lieutenant to a higher rank. Both officers have been suspended from their posts for the duration of the trials. Seong appears to have cultivated a network of contacts within the local police force and prosecution services. Tak confessed to giving money to Seong to bribe officials and officers to help clear his name, but the plan backfired when a prosecutor was jailed for accepting a bribe. Seong has confessed to putting envelopes of cash into the officers’ coat pockets at a restaurant.
The defense team for the superintendent officer is challenging the accuracy of the allegations, questioning why Seong would request a promotion in February after promotion lists had already been finalized. They also probed Seong on whether he explicitly asked the superintendent to promote his subordinate when handing over the alleged bribes. Seong claimed he was in a hurry at the time and his recollection of events was unclear. The court is set to reconvene on June 11, with more officers expected to face trial in connection with the case.
The prosecution has indicted a total of 18 people in relation to the crypto fraud case, including former and current prosecutors, police officials, and another broker. The widespread implications of the case highlight the extent of corruption and bribery within South Korea’s law enforcement and prosecution agencies.
