World Alzheimer’s Month in September is a time to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia, a syndrome affecting memory, cognition, and daily tasks. By 2050, it’s estimated that nearly 153 million people worldwide will suffer from dementia, with a rise expected in the Middle East, including Qatar. The Department of Geriatrics and Long-Term Care at Hamad Medical Corporation is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Ageing and Dementia, organizing activities to raise awareness about dementia under the theme “Time to Act on Dementia, Time to Act on Alzheimer’s”.

Dr. Hanadi Al Hamad, Head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Ageing and Dementia, announced events across Qatar in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Primary Health Care Corporation. Qatar has made significant progress in dementia care, improving services since the first Geriatric Memory Clinic was established in 2012 at Rumailah Hospital. The Specialized Geriatric Memory Team offers person-centered care with comprehensive evaluations using the latest biomarkers for accurate diagnosis.

For individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment, the Geriatric Wellness Clinic provides cutting-edge services to address risk factors and slow the progression of the condition. The National Alzheimer’s and Memory Services Helpline, known as RAHA, offers direct access to a specialized multidisciplinary team for people living with dementia and caregivers. These initiatives aim to create dementia-friendly communities and reduce the stigma associated with dementia in Qatar.

HMC focuses on delivering interprofessional, multi-disciplinary, and evidence-based care that is compassionate and person-centered in alignment with key focus areas such as Practice, Workforce, Leadership, and Innovation. Qatar’s 2030 vision includes meeting the human needs of current and future generations by supporting elderly care and beyond. The aim is to empower and support people living with dementia and their caregivers through unique services and initiatives offered by the Geriatric Memory Team at various facilities across Qatar.
