Syria’s national airline has resumed regular services to Saudi Arabia after a 12-year suspension, with the first flight arriving in Riyadh on Wednesday. This move comes as part of a slow rapprochement between the two countries, following the restoration of diplomatic relations last year. Syrian Airlines announced the resumption of services, with confirmation from Syria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ayman Soussan. The ambassador reported that a plane carrying 170 passengers landed in Riyadh, marking the restart of the regular route. Both countries have agreed to operate one round-trip flight per week between Riyadh and Damascus after the long pause due to the civil war in Syria.

Suleiman Khalil, a Syrian transport ministry official, mentioned that the direct route could potentially be expanded to cover airports in other Saudi cities such as Jeddah and Dammam based on demand. This indicates a willingness on both sides to further enhance air travel connections between the two nations. Services between Syria and Saudi Arabia resumed temporarily in May for pilgrims participating in the annual Muslim hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. This marked an initial step towards normalizing air travel between the two countries, with the recent resumption of regular services serving as a significant milestone in strengthening ties.

The resumption of direct flights between Riyadh and Damascus signifies a positive development in the relationship between Syria and Saudi Arabia. After years of strained relations, this step towards increased connectivity through air travel demonstrates a mutual effort towards cooperation and normalizing diplomatic ties. The agreement to operate one round-trip flight per week is a clear indication of the commitment from both sides to promote people-to-people exchanges and facilitate travel between the two nations. This not only benefits passengers looking to visit or conduct business in either country but also reflects a broader desire for improved relations on both political and economic fronts.

Syria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ayman Soussan, emphasized the importance of resuming regular flights between the two countries, highlighting the potential for further expansion to additional Saudi cities such as Jeddah and Dammam. This forward-looking approach indicates a willingness to explore new opportunities for air connectivity and enhance travel options for passengers. The resumption of services between Syria and Saudi Arabia for pilgrims during the annual hajj pilgrimage served as a precursor to the recent restart of regular flights, laying the groundwork for broader cooperation in the aviation sector. As demand for travel between the two countries increases, the possibility of expanding direct routes to additional destinations becomes more viable, opening up new avenues for collaboration and exchange.

The resumption of regular airline services between Syria and Saudi Arabia following a 12-year hiatus marks a significant step towards rebuilding connections and fostering mutual understanding. By reinstating direct flights between Riyadh and Damascus, both countries are signaling a shared commitment to strengthening ties and promoting closer relations. The agreement to operate one weekly round-trip flight signifies a renewed emphasis on promoting people-to-people exchanges and facilitating travel, underscoring the potential for increased cooperation in various sectors. As the demand for air travel between Syria and Saudi Arabia continues to grow, the possibility of expanding services to other cities presents an opportunity for further collaboration and connectivity in the region.

With the recent resumption of regular flights between Riyadh and Damascus, Syria’s national airline has taken a crucial step towards reestablishing air travel links with Saudi Arabia. This development reflects a positive shift in the relationship between the two countries, highlighting a willingness to enhance connectivity and promote greater interaction. As both nations seek to expand their cooperation in various areas, the recommencement of direct flights serves as a tangible example of progress towards normalization and reconciliation. By opening up new avenues for travel and exchange, this decision paves the way for increased engagement and collaboration between Syria and Saudi Arabia in the future.
