The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Bahrain Public Prosecution Office has been actively working to uphold the rule of law and promote human rights. In a report released by Mohammed Khalid Al Hazza, Acting Attorney-General and SIU Chief, the activities of the unit during the final three months of 2024 were detailed. The report highlighted that the SIU received 12 complaints during this period, all alleging violations within its specialized jurisdiction. Each complaint triggered a prompt investigation, involving interviewing 25 complainants and witnesses, and questioning 20 suspects and individuals from the public security forces. Seven complainants were referred to the forensic medicine and psychological support department for further assessment.

Significant progress was made in several cases by the SIU. One case, initiated by a complaint received via social media, led to the conviction of a member of the public security forces who received a six-month prison sentence from the Lower Criminal Court on November 13, 2024, a sentence upheld by the Appeals Court. In two separate cases, the SIU concluded investigations and referred two members of the public security forces to the Ministry of Interior’s Military Courts for disciplinary action based on findings that substantiated the allegations against them. Additionally, disciplinary actions were issued against two other members of the public security forces in cases previously referred to the Military Courts.

The SIU’s commitment to human rights was further demonstrated through its active participation in a significant event. On December 10, 2024, coinciding with International Human Rights Day and the 40th anniversary of the UN Convention against Torture, the SIU, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hosted a discussion session titled “Human Rights in the Bahraini Criminal Justice System – Achievements, Experiences, and Future Outlook.” The session was attended by 60 participants from various national institutions, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations, focusing on Bahrain’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards, the evolution of national legislation, and strategies for future improvements.

Overall, the SIU has been actively investigating complaints and ensuring that human rights are upheld within the Bahraini criminal justice system. The unit’s efforts have led to significant achievements, including the conviction of individuals involved in violations and the referral of cases to the appropriate disciplinary authorities. By participating in events such as the discussion session on human rights, the SIU is demonstrating its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in Bahrain.

The report released by Mohammed Khalid Al Hazza highlights the dedication and professionalism of the SIU in its investigations. With a focus on upholding the rule of law and promoting human rights, the unit plays a crucial role in ensuring justice is served in Bahrain. The active participation in events related to human rights further demonstrates the SIU’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations. Through prompt investigations and collaboration with relevant authorities, the SIU continues to make significant progress in addressing complaints and bringing perpetrators to justice.

In conclusion, the Special Investigation Unit of the Bahrain Public Prosecution Office has been actively working to uphold the rule of law and promote human rights in Bahrain. Through prompt investigations and collaboration with relevant authorities, the SIU has achieved significant progress in addressing complaints and ensuring that justice is served. The unit’s commitment to human rights is demonstrated through its participation in events focused on human rights, showcasing its dedication to upholding international standards. With continued efforts and dedication, the SIU plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in Bahrain’s criminal justice system.
