The Shura Council recently participated in two important meetings in Geneva, focusing on the preparations for the Sixth Global Conference of Speakers of Parliaments and the 15th Conference of Women Parliamentarians, scheduled for July 2025. H E Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, the Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, represented the Arab Group in these preparatory committees. During the meetings, Dr. Al Sulaiti emphasized the global challenges facing the international community, including armed conflicts, climate change, food security, and cybersecurity.

Dr. Al Sulaiti stressed the importance of international Parliaments in addressing these challenges through reforms within the UN Security Council and other international institutions. She highlighted Qatar’s efforts in promoting global peace through mediation and conflict resolution. Additionally, she discussed the evolving technological challenges, particularly cybersecurity, and emphasized the responsible use of technology to achieve justice and stability on a global scale.

At the meeting focused on the 15th Conference of Women Parliamentarians, Dr. Al Sulaiti highlighted the issue of political violence against women. Despite progress in women’s involvement in politics, she noted that women still face significant obstacles, including verbal, cyber, and physical violence. She particularly pointed out the struggles of Palestinian women who have faced detention, violence, and displacement in their fight for political and economic rights. This serves as a reminder that Arab women continue to endure political violence and discrimination.

In both meetings, Dr. Al Sulaiti underlined the importance of multilateralism and international cooperation in addressing these challenges. She emphasized the need for Parliaments to play a crucial role in ensuring adherence to international laws and promoting peace and stability globally. The Deputy Speaker’s participation in these meetings demonstrates Qatar’s commitment to contributing to global discussions on pressing issues and advocating for the rights and empowerment of women in politics.

Overall, the Shura Council’s involvement in the preparatory committees for these upcoming conferences reflects Qatar’s dedication to addressing global challenges and promoting dialogue and cooperation among international Parliaments. The active participation of Dr. Al Sulaiti in these discussions highlights the country’s commitment to advocating for peace, justice, and equal rights for all, particularly for women who continue to face barriers and violence in the political sphere. As the conferences approach in 2025, the Shura Council and its representatives will continue to engage in these important conversations and work towards a more inclusive and peaceful future for all.
