Chess is making a comeback in schools across Sharjah as the emirate aims to cultivate new talents by promoting the game among students. The Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, in collaboration with the UAE Chess Federation, is leading efforts to generate interest in the game within educational institutions. Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Hamid Al Qasimi, President of the UAE Arab Chess Federation, emphasized the importance of schools in nurturing and developing future chess players. The aim is to expand initiatives throughout Sharjah and engage all schools to uncover budding talents.

Having been involved in chess since childhood, Sheikh Dr Khalid shared his passion for the game and the strategic thinking it requires. He highlighted the benefits of chess in enhancing critical thinking and practical skills, emphasizing the importance of concentration and planning. The expansion of chess clubs in the region is seen as crucial in promoting the sport, with specialized clubs for both male and female players already in place. The Sharjah Cultural Chess Club also houses a chess academy to support and develop the skills of the expat population in the emirate.

The success of the academy is evident in the achievements of its students, with two international champions emerging from its ranks. Seasonal tournaments cater to different age groups, focusing on refining expertise and providing a platform for players to showcase their abilities. Sheikh Dr Khalid emphasized the importance of engaging young people in chess, citing its positive impact on time management, planning, and mental development. Furthermore, he highlighted the benefits of chess in reducing interest in destructive electronic games and encouraging unconventional thinking through strategic gameplay.

Sharjah is set to host the Arab Individual Chess Championship and the Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship in November 2024, attracting participants from 22 countries affiliated with the Arab Chess Federation. The event, organized by the Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club, will feature classical, rapid, and blitz playing systems. The club, known for hosting numerous world championships, aims to provide a competitive platform for players to showcase their skills and compete at an international level. Overall, the efforts to promote chess in schools and communities reflect a commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of strategic thinking and mental agility.
