Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP) and Ministry of Energy (MoEnergy), in collaboration with UpLink, have recently announced the launch of the Carbon Capture and Utilization Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to seek innovative solutions that accelerate the circular carbon economy. The initiative was announced during the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, focusing on SDG 13 and interlinkages with other SDGs related to climate action. The challenge encourages startups to submit solutions that drive carbon reductions through sustainable systems transformation, including carbon capture technologies, novel carbon utilization applications, and industrial integration.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, emphasized the importance of addressing climate change on a global scale. He stated that Saudi Arabia aims to achieve its ambitious goal of reaching net zero by 2060 through the Circular Carbon Economy Framework. This framework not only aims to reduce the impact of carbon emissions but also aims to value carbon as a resource with real economic value. In line with this vision, the Kingdom has launched a global carbon capture and utilization challenge in partnership with leading organizations. The challenge represents an opportunity for individuals and organizations to transform tomorrow’s challenges into today’s solutions through joint efforts and pioneering innovations.

Faisal Alibrahim, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Economy and Planning, highlighted the Kingdom’s commitment to a just, orderly, and pragmatic energy transition. Through the Carbon Capture and Utilization Challenge, the Kingdom hopes to see new solutions that push innovation forward. Alibrahim encouraged innovators, thinkers, and companies to come up with out-of-the-box solutions, even if they may seem like a long shot at present but could be applicable and actionable in the future. Submissions will be evaluated based on scalability, commercial viability, technological readiness, and fundraising success. Winners will be recognized as top innovators and join the UpLink Innovation Ecosystem, receiving a cash award of up to CHF 300,000 and technical, business, and operational support to scale their ideas.

Saudi Arabia has pledged a long-term commitment to addressing climate change and cooperating with other countries to combat climate change. The Kingdom launched the Circular Carbon Economy Framework as part of its efforts to reduce and remove carbon emissions in alignment with the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The initiative emphasizes the role of innovation in driving a sustainable and economically prosperous future, highlighting the importance of carbon capture and utilization in reaching net-zero goals by mid-century. Through collaborations with organizations like UpLink, Saudi Arabia aims to lead influential changes in efforts to confront climate change and encourage individuals and organizations to contribute to innovative solutions in the circular carbon economy.
