Sakkari reveals 25 players in contention for Wimbledon title – News

The Wimbledon women’s draw is wide open this year, with Greece’s Maria Sakkari believing that there are 25 potential champions in the competition. Sakkari, seeded ninth, easily defeated American qualifier McCartney Kessler in the first round and is hoping to improve on her previous performances at the tournament. Despite never making it past the third round at Wimbledon, Sakkari feels confident about her chances this year and sees an opportunity to make her mark.

Sakkari’s recent record in Grand Slams has been poor, with a first-round exit at the French Open where she was seeded sixth. However, her victory in the opening round at Wimbledon has given her a confidence boost. With third seed Aryna Sabalenka withdrawing due to injury, Sakkari believes that many players in the draw have a chance to win the tournament, similar to last year’s surprise winner Marketa Vondrousova. She sees the depth of women’s tennis as a positive, with many players capable of claiming the title.

The Wimbledon grass courts have been described as playing more like a medium-fast hardcourt in recent years, making it suitable for players of all playing styles. Sakkari believes that any top player can adapt to grass and be successful on the surface. Along with Sakkari, Russia’s Daria Kasatkina and Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk also advanced to the second round with impressive victories, further showcasing the competitive nature of this year’s tournament.

The unpredictability of the Wimbledon women’s draw has been evident in recent years, with seven different winners in the last seven editions of the tournament. Sakkari’s confidence and belief that numerous players have a chance to win highlights the competitiveness and quality of the field.
