The State of Qatar recently participated in a workshop titled ‘China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF): marking 20 years,’ organized by the Secretariat General of Arab League’s Media and Communication Sector in Cairo. The workshop aimed to strengthen political relations between Arab countries and the People’s Republic of China, with a focus on diversifying partnerships through turning towards Asia. The director of the Arab Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nayef bin Abdullah Al Emadi, represented Qatar at the workshop and highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation with influential countries in Asia.

Al Emadi mentioned that the first China-Arab States Summit in Riyadh in 2022 marked significant progress in various fields including political, economic, cultural, media, and developmental cooperation. This summit had a positive impact on the expansion of trade relations between Arab countries and China, making the latter one of their largest trading partners. Qatar’s relations with China have also grown significantly since the visit of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Beijing in 2019, leading to the signing of agreements opening new prospects for bilateral relations, making Qatar the primary source of natural gas to China.

One of the primary challenges addressed at the workshop was the importance of confronting global fluctuations and changes in international alliances. The Russian-Ukrainian war and the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in disruptions in the international community, leading to catastrophic economic impacts such as inflation spikes and supply chain shortages. Al Emadi highlighted the need for collective efforts within the framework of Arab-Chinese cooperation mechanisms to address these challenges, resulting in high expectations for the forum to enhance communication between Arab countries and China in various fields.

The workshop aimed to provide an institutional framework for collective cooperation between Arab countries and the People’s Republic of China, with mechanisms extending to senior officials and ministerial levels. The forum emphasized the importance of enhancing Arab-Chinese communication in various fields such as political, economic, cultural, media, and developmental cooperation. The workshop also focused on strengthening partnerships and diversifying alliances amidst increasing international interest in Asia, recognizing the importance of turning eastwards for enhanced cooperation.

In conclusion, the workshop on ‘China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF): marking 20 years’ highlighted the importance of strengthening political relations between Arab countries and the People’s Republic of China. Qatar’s participation in the workshop and its growing relations with China were underscored, along with the significance of addressing global fluctuations and changes in international alliances. The forum provided a platform for enhancing cooperation and communication between Arab countries and China in various fields, with a focus on diversifying partnerships and building stronger alliances in the face of economic and geopolitical challenges.
