The 27th International Book Fair of Algiers (SILA) has commenced with the theme of “Reading for Victory” and the State of Qatar as this year’s guest of honor. From November 1 to November 16, 2024, over 1,000 publishing houses from 40 countries will be showcasing their publications across various genres. The fair will also feature a diverse program of cultural and intellectual activities, including lectures and meetings with local, Arab, and African intellectual personalities.

One of the highlights of this year’s fair is the Palestine Space, which aims to show solidarity with the Palestinian people, particularly those in Gaza. Various seminars will be conducted on topics such as Algeria and Palestine, genocide in Gaza, literature and resistance in Palestine, and more. Additionally, there will be solidarity poetry evenings with the participation of creatives from Algeria and other Arab countries.

A dedicated salon at SILA will host discussions on literature, heritage, history, and cinema, with the participation of intellectuals and thinkers from the Arab world and beyond. Amongst the notable figures participating are Mariam Yassin Al Hamadi and Mohammed Al Balushi from Qatar, Algerian writer Wassini Al Araj, Senegalese author Mohamed Lamine Kamara, Ivorian intellectual Armon Goz, and Guinean thinker Sancy Kaba Diakite.

The fair offers a unique opportunity for book enthusiasts to explore a wide range of publications from different cultures and perspectives. It aims to promote reading and intellectual engagement, while also fostering solidarity and understanding among diverse communities. With its rich program of activities and seminars, SILA serves as a platform for fostering dialogue and exchange among writers, intellectuals, and readers from around the world.

The SILA organizers hope that this year’s fair will not only promote a love for reading but also raise awareness about important global issues, such as the plight of the Palestinian people. By bringing together a diverse group of voices and perspectives, the fair seeks to enrich cultural understanding and promote peace and solidarity. The participation of intellectuals and thinkers from different countries underscores the importance of dialogue and exchange in fostering mutual respect and cooperation.

Overall, the 27th International Book Fair of Algiers promises to be a vibrant and engaging event, offering visitors the chance to explore new ideas, perspectives, and literary works. With the State of Qatar as the guest of honor and an impressive lineup of activities and seminars, SILA 2024 is set to be a memorable and enlightening experience for book lovers and intellectuals alike.
