It’s summertime in the UAE, and many schools will close for the holidays between July and August. This means families will have around eight weeks of break, and expats often take this opportunity to go on vacations or visit their families back home. However, before leaving your house unattended, it’s important to take preventive measures to secure your home and property. Abu Dhabi Police has advised citizens and expats to take security measures to reduce theft and fire risks while they are away.

One of the key points to secure your home is to ensure all doors, windows, and entry points are securely locked before leaving. Back entrances are often neglected, so make sure to jam and lock them as well. Installing surveillance cameras can also help monitor any suspicious activity and act as a deterrent to burglars. Keeping up to date with the latest news through platforms like WhatsApp Channels can also help stay informed about any potential risks.

Investing in smart home technologies and alarm systems can provide real-time alerts and allow you to monitor your home remotely. It’s also important to store valuable items such as money, jewelry, and important documents in safe places like bank lockers or secure safes to reduce the risk of theft. Regular maintenance of your home’s electrical and gas systems can prevent fire hazards and ensure safety from electrical faults and gas leaks.

Informing your neighbors about your travel plans can also be beneficial as they can help keep an eye on your property and alert you or the authorities if anything suspicious occurs. Additionally, it’s important to secure your vehicles by parking them in designated areas and ensuring they are locked before leaving. UAE authorities often warn against posting travel details and photos on social media as it can make your home a target for thieves while you’re away.

Dubai Police advises travelers not to post pictures of their boarding pass on social media as it may contain personal information that can be used for identity theft and other crimes. Seeking help from Dubai Police for home security is also an option, as they offer a free preventative security service to protect homes while residents are on vacation or traveling. This service allows villa residents to use patrols available in neighborhoods to monitor their homes and ensure their safety.
