A proposal has been introduced to the House of Representatives in Bahrain to increase penalties for drivers who use the road shoulder, also known as the yellow line. The proposal suggests imprisonment of up to six months and/or a fine ranging from BD 50 to BD 500 for such violations. This penalty would not override any stricter penalties outlined in other laws. The proposal aims to address the significant number of traffic accidents caused by illegal use of the emergency lane, leading to injuries and fatalities.

The proposal, put forward by Maryam Al Dhain and referred to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee, aligns with Article 1/20 of the Bahraini Constitution which states that no crime or punishment should exist without a corresponding law. Al Dhain emphasized the need for stronger deterrence to prevent reckless driving behavior, proposing that driving on the shoulder be punished with the same severity as street racing. The current penalties are seen as insufficient to effectively deter drivers from engaging in dangerous behavior on the roads.

The proposal seeks to tackle the growing issue of reckless driving and ensure the safety of all road users. The committee will review the proposal before it goes to the full parliament for debate and potential enactment. With the increasing number of traffic accidents caused by illegal use of the road shoulder, the need for stricter penalties to deter such behavior is becoming more apparent. By enforcing tougher penalties, the hope is that drivers will think twice before endangering themselves and others through reckless driving.

The proposed penalties aim to send a clear message that driving on the road shoulder is not only illegal but also dangerous. By aligning the penalties for this offense with those for street racing, the proposal seeks to highlight the seriousness of the issue and the potential consequences of such reckless behavior. The ultimate goal is to create a safer road environment for all users by deterring drivers from engaging in risky and illegal activities that put lives at risk.

The safety of road users is paramount, and the proposed increase in penalties for driving on the shoulder is one step towards achieving this goal. By imposing stricter punishments for this offense, the hope is that drivers will be more mindful of their behavior on the roads and prioritize safety above all else. The proposed penalties will serve as a strong deterrent to prevent drivers from taking unnecessary risks and endangering themselves and others while driving.

In conclusion, the proposal to increase penalties for drivers who use the road shoulder in Bahrain is a positive step towards improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents caused by reckless driving. By aligning the penalties for this offense with those for street racing, the proposal aims to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. The review of the proposal by the committee is an important next step in the process, and it is hoped that it will ultimately be enacted to ensure the safety of all road users in Bahrain.
