In the first half of this year, the Kingdom of Bahrain experienced a substantial volume of postal transactions, totaling at 248,778. These transactions encompassed various types of mail, including Barid Mumtaz (Express) mail, regular mail, registered mail, and postal parcels. Regular mail had the highest number of transactions at 160,465, followed by registered mail with 59,650 transactions, Barid Mumtaz mail at 17,457 transactions, and postal parcels at 11,206 transactions.

In response to the growing e-commerce sector, authorities in Bahrain are actively expanding the air cargo area at the new airport. As part of a strategic plan for Bahrain International Airport, a 25,000-square-metre air cargo area is under construction. This expansion aims to enhance the airport’s capacity to accommodate shipments totaling 1.3 million tonnes annually, facilitating the increasing demand for air cargo services.

Middle Eastern airlines have shown impressive performance, recording a 25.9% year-on-year increase in air cargo volumes since January 2024. This growth surpasses the previous month’s performance of 18.3% and highlights the region’s significant role in the air cargo market. Airlines in the Middle East have capitalized on the growth in Asian and European markets, with notable increases of 29.5% and 46.1%, respectively, contributing to the overall rise in air cargo capacity by 17.1% in January 2024 compared to the previous year.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports an 18.4% rise in global demand for air cargo, measured by freight tonnes per kilometer, compared to the same period in 2023. International operations saw a 19.8% increase, while overall capacity grew by 14.6% in January 2024 compared to the previous year, with international operations rising by 18.2%. This growth is attributed to the increased cargo capacity in aircraft fuselages, with international passenger capacity also seeing a significant annual increase of 25.8%, driven by thriving traveler markets.

The continuous growth of air cargo services in Bahrain and the Middle East reflects the region’s strategic importance in the global logistics industry. The expansion of Bahrain International Airport’s air cargo area demonstrates the commitment of Bahrain’s authorities to meet the growing demands of e-commerce and other industries reliant on efficient shipping services. With Middle Eastern airlines showing strong performance and capitalizing on market opportunities, the region is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of the air cargo industry.

In conclusion, the increasing volume of postal transactions and air cargo activities in Bahrain underscores the nation’s growing prominence as a logistics hub in the Middle East. With strategic developments and expansions in place to accommodate the rising demand for air cargo services, Bahrain is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the booming e-commerce sector and global trade networks. As Middle Eastern airlines continue to demonstrate strong performance and capitalize on market growth, the region’s role in the air cargo market is set to expand further, contributing to the overall growth and development of the global logistics industry.
