Animal diseases can be as complex and serious as human illnesses, with pets suffering from conditions like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and Alzheimer’s. Veterinary medicine faces challenges in diagnosing and treating animals due to the need to observe their behavior, as explained by Ali Hammad, a veterinarian. Animals, like humans, can have similar diseases, such as influenza, stomach germs, blood pressure, blood sugar, cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol, and Alzheimer’s, among others. Hammad shared a heartwarming story of a bird with cancer that highlighted the importance of understanding animal behaviors in the diagnosis process.

Veterinary surgeon Dr. Emile Matar also emphasized the difficulty of diagnosing diseases in animals due to their slow progression and the need for observation. Dogs can suffer from conditions like cognitive dysfunction, similar to Alzheimer’s, which reflects in symptoms like disorientation, disrupted sleep patterns, and a change in learning behavior. Treatments with brain oxidation-reducing acids can help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for pets and their owners. Diabetes is another common disease in pets that requires a low-carb diet and insulin treatment, with specific medications like Caninsulin available for dogs.

Both veterinarians stress the importance of regular check-ups, maintaining cleanliness in the pet’s living space, and using insecticides to prevent diseases. They recommend that potential pet owners conduct thorough research before adopting a pet and commit to understanding the animal’s long-term needs. Responsible pet ownership includes recognizing the commitment required for various animals, like the ten-year commitment needed for caring for a rabbit. Regular check-ups, especially for senior animals, can increase the lifespan of pets and contribute to their overall health and well-being.

Dr. Hammad shared his experiences with caring for various pets, including two cats, a bird, and a falcon, emphasizing the challenges of balancing animal care with working in a hospital. He advises potential pet owners to evaluate their schedules and resources before committing to pet ownership to ensure they can provide the necessary care and attention. Observing pet behavior, understanding their needs, and prioritizing regular veterinary check-ups are crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of pets. Proactive measures like regular check-ups and cleanliness can significantly impact pets’ overall health and longevity, ultimately benefiting both the pets and their owners.
