The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in Muscat hosted the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between US-based satellite launch company ABL Space Systems and Etlaq spaceport. This partnership aims to bring orbital satellite launch capability to the Gulf region. The focus of the initial project will be on evaluating logistics, site construction, and developing regulatory frameworks with both the US and Oman governments. The Etlaq Spaceport, located at 18-degree latitude, is expected to be operational in 2027 and will provide access to a wide range of orbits, strengthening Oman’s position as a leader in the space industry.

The signing of the MOU was attended by CAA President Naif Al-Abri and Ana Escrogima, the United States Ambassador to Oman. ABL CEO Harry O’Hanley expressed excitement about the partnership, noting the growth of the Gulf region’s space ecosystem and the benefits of local access to space. His Highness Sayyid Azzan bin Qais Al Said, CEO of Etlaq, emphasized the importance of the partnership in developing Oman’s space sector and positioning the spaceport as a global choice for rocket companies. This collaboration marks a significant step towards achieving Oman’s goals in the space industry and enhancing international cooperation in this sector.

The Etlaq Spaceport’s location at 18-degree latitude provides strategic advantages for launching satellites into a variety of orbits, from sun synchronous to low inclination orbits. The nearby commercial airport and deepwater port in Duqm offer critical logistical capabilities to support satellite missions. The spaceport is expected to play a key role in strengthening Oman’s presence in the space industry, positioning the Sultanate as a regional and global leader in this field.

The MOU between ABL Space Systems and Etlaq marks a significant milestone in the development of the space sector in Oman. The partnership will allow for the launch of ABL’s RS1 launch vehicle from the Etlaq Spaceport, bringing advanced satellite launch capabilities to the Gulf region. The project will focus on evaluating logistics, site construction, and regulatory frameworks, in collaboration with the US and Oman governments. This partnership reflects Oman’s commitment to developing its space sector and enhancing international cooperation in space exploration.

Both ABL Space Systems and Etlaq are committed to advancing the space industry in Oman and the broader Gulf region. ABL CEO Harry O’Hanley highlighted the growing investment and ambition in space exploration, science missions, and constellation deployment in the Gulf region, emphasizing the benefits of local access to space. His Highness Sayyid Azzan bin Qais Al Said, CEO of Etlaq, expressed pride in reaching this milestone with ABL Space Systems and underscored the importance of the MOU in positioning the spaceport as a global choice for established rocket companies. This collaboration showcases the potential for growth and innovation in Oman’s space sector.
