In 2023, total investments in Oman’s telecommunications sector reached OMR221.9 million, with mobile telecommunications services accounting for 53.7 percent of the total investments. Fixed telecommunication services, including wired and landline services, made up 37 percent of the investments, while other services constituted 9.3 percent. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) issued 12 “public consultation briefings” throughout the year to engage stakeholders and gather input on creating a flexible regulatory environment that can adapt to modern developments.

The TRA focused on expanding broadband networks across Oman in 2023, with the number of 5th Generation (5G) stations reaching 5,238 and the number of residential units covered by fibre-optic networks growing to 773,589. In addition, the TRA approved 377 permits and licenses for various communication services, including tracking and geolocation services, Internet of Things services, telecommunications services, private networks, infrastructure access, experimental regulatory environments, and voice or video communications services via the Internet Protocol.

A significant development in 2023 was the authorization of 15 new companies to provide postal services, bringing the total number of licensed companies in the sector to 63. This move was driven by the increasing volume of incoming mail, both domestically and internationally. The expansion of postal services also led to the creation of 1,624 additional job opportunities, with 1,223 of these positions being filled by Omani citizens.

The telecommunications sector in Oman continues to undergo rapid growth and development, with a strong emphasis on expanding broadband networks, adopting new technologies like 5G, and enhancing regulatory frameworks to support innovation and competition. The issuance of permits and licenses for various communication services demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting a diverse and competitive telecommunications market.

The increase in investments in mobile telecommunications services reflects the growing demand for mobile connectivity and the shift towards digital communication platforms. By prioritizing the expansion of broadband networks and fiber-optic infrastructure, the TRA is working towards ensuring widespread access to high-speed internet services across the country, which is essential for economic growth, education, and social connectivity.

The expansion of postal services and the creation of new job opportunities in the sector underscore the importance of a robust communications infrastructure in supporting economic development and enhancing the quality of life for residents. By promoting competition and innovation in the telecommunications and postal services markets, Oman is positioning itself as a leader in the region’s digital transformation and paving the way for a more connected and prosperous future.
