Saudi Arabia is bracing for a significant weather event, with the National Center for Meteorology (NCM) forecasting widespread rainfall across much of the country beginning Saturday. The six-day forecast predicts moderate to heavy precipitation, raising concerns about potential flash floods, hail, and strong winds. Residents are urged to exercise caution and heed safety guidelines issued by authorities.

The anticipated rainfall will impact a large geographical area, extending from the western regions of Makkah and Madinah to the northern areas of Tabuk and the Northern Borders, as well as parts of the Eastern Province. The NCM’s detailed weather map indicates varying intensities of precipitation, with the Makkah region expected to experience some of the most severe conditions. This weather system is expected to persist for several days, potentially disrupting daily life and travel.

Widespread Rainfall Expected Across Saudi Arabia

According to the NCM, the Makkah region is particularly vulnerable, with cities including Makkah, Jeddah, Taif, and Rabigh facing the highest risk of moderate to heavy rain. This precipitation could lead to flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas. Additionally, the forecast warns of potential hail and strong downdraft winds that could reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.

Regional Breakdown of Forecasted Precipitation

Beyond Makkah, the Riyadh region is also expected to receive moderate rainfall, particularly in areas such as Al-Dawadmi, Afif, and Al-Zulfi. The report indicates that the northern regions of Tabuk, Al-Jouf, and the Northern Borders will experience similar conditions. The provinces of Hail, Qassim, and Al-Baha are also included in the areas expected to see significant precipitation.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Region is anticipated to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, potentially impacting industrial areas and transportation networks. In contrast, the Asir and Jazan regions, located in the southwest, are expected to experience moderate rainfall throughout the duration of the weather system, though the intensity is predicted to be less severe than in other areas. These regions often experience seasonal rainfall, but the extended duration of this event is noteworthy.

The potential for flash floods is a major concern, particularly in desert areas where the ground is less able to absorb large volumes of water. The NCM emphasizes the importance of avoiding valleys and flood-prone areas during and immediately after heavy rainfall. This is especially critical given the potential for rapid water accumulation in normally dry riverbeds.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense has issued a public safety announcement urging residents to take precautions. This includes staying in safe areas, avoiding unnecessary travel, and refraining from swimming in watercourses. The directorate also advises the public to closely monitor official media channels and government platforms for updates and safety instructions. Staying informed is crucial for mitigating risks associated with severe weather.

The current weather pattern is linked to a convergence of atmospheric conditions, including a low-pressure system extending across the region and increased moisture levels from the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. These factors are combining to create an environment conducive to prolonged and widespread precipitation. Meteorological experts are monitoring the system’s development closely to refine forecasts and provide more accurate warnings.

The impact of this rainfall could extend beyond immediate safety concerns. Potential disruptions to transportation, including road closures and flight delays, are anticipated. Agricultural areas could also be affected, with the possibility of crop damage due to flooding or hail. The economic consequences of the weather event are still uncertain and will depend on the severity and duration of the precipitation.

Looking ahead, the NCM will continue to issue regular updates on the evolving weather situation. The forecast remains subject to change, and residents are encouraged to stay informed about the latest developments. Authorities are prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise, and ongoing monitoring will be essential to assess the full extent of the impact of this significant weather event. The duration of the heavy precipitation is currently projected to last through Thursday, but further adjustments to the forecast are possible.
