Citizens in Bahrain are facing a sharp rise in their housing loan payments due to unexpected changes in the way allowances are factored into calculations. This change affects participants in the Land and Loan scheme, a government program aimed at providing affordable housing. The sudden inclusion of allowances like social, travel, and phone benefits has nearly doubled payments for some families, putting additional strain on low-income households already struggling with rising living costs.

MPs like Zainab Abdulamir are calling for a change to the policy, urging the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning to base payments solely on basic wages rather than including additional allowances. The Council of Representatives has unanimously supported this plan, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the issue and ensure that future payments are calculated based solely on basic pay.

The unexpected changes in the housing loan payments have caught many citizens off guard, with some facing instalments that are almost double what they were expecting. The MPs stress the importance of quickly addressing the issue to prevent further financial hardship for those affected, especially for low-income families who are already struggling to make ends meet.

The gap between payments based solely on basic pay and those that include allowances is significant, particularly for families with limited income. The MPs are citing parliamentary rules and requesting that the issue be addressed promptly during the upcoming session on 22 October 2024. They believe that action is necessary to provide much-needed assistance to those who have been waiting for over 20 years to secure affordable housing.

The unanimous support from the Council of Representatives signals a strong commitment to fixing the issues with the housing scheme and supporting families in need. The recent changes have led to increased challenges for low-income households, exacerbating the financial pressures they already face due to rising living costs. The MPs emphasize the urgency of addressing the problem and ensuring that payments are calculated fairly and accurately based on basic wages alone.

In conclusion, the unexpected inclusion of allowances in housing loan calculations has caused a financial burden for many citizens in Bahrain, particularly those with limited income. MPs are pushing for changes to the policy to ensure that payments are based solely on basic wages, as originally promised to applicants of the Land and Loan scheme. The Council of Representatives is backing this plan and calling for immediate action to address the issue and provide relief to families facing increased payment obligations. By addressing this issue promptly, the government can help alleviate the financial strain on low-income households and ensure that the housing scheme serves its intended purpose of providing affordable housing for those in need.
