Ukraine and Moldova, two Eastern European countries, are currently in negotiations to join the European Union by the end of the decade. The EU negotiations have just started with both countries, one of which is currently at war with Russia. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Kyiv applied for EU membership, followed shortly by Moldova. Both countries were granted candidate member status in a political decision aimed at supporting them in their time of need. However, full membership will not come easy, as both countries still need to implement significant reforms in areas such as the economy and judiciary.

One Moldovan MP, Eugeniu Sinchevici, emphasized the importance of joining the EU for the country. Sinchevici highlighted the progress towards a democratic and free society that has been made in Moldova and expressed the desire to maintain that progress with the help of the European Union. However, there are opposing voices in Moldovan politics, with some advocating for closer ties to Moscow rather than a move towards the West. Nikita Romensky, a spokesperson for the Socialist Party of Moldova, expressed concerns about the “westernisation” of Moldova and stressed the importance of maintaining good relationships with Russia and other traditional partners. Despite these differing opinions, ordinary citizens view potential EU accession as a positive development.

For individuals like Olha Shyvchik, the start of EU negotiations provides hope for a brighter future. Olha, who is from Ukraine but currently living in Moldova, expressed her desire for her daughter to be part of the European Union. She envisions a future where her daughter can live in a civilized and developed country, with opportunities for education and freedom of expression. However, Olha also recognizes the challenges that Ukraine and Moldova must overcome before joining the EU. She acknowledges the need for significant progress in combating corruption, emphasizing that this process will need to be gradual.

The potential accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union carries significant implications for both countries. Joining the EU would provide access to a larger market, increased investment opportunities, and enhanced political stability. In addition, membership in the EU could offer greater security for these Eastern European nations, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. However, the path to full EU membership will require substantial reforms in various sectors, including the economy, judiciary, and governance. Both Ukraine and Moldova will need to demonstrate their commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law in order to meet the EU’s membership criteria.

As negotiations progress, it is essential for both Ukraine and Moldova to address the challenges and opportunities that come with EU membership. The EU has made it clear that full accession will only come after significant reforms are implemented. This process will require commitment and cooperation from both countries, as well as support from EU member states. Ultimately, the decision to join the European Union has the potential to transform Ukraine and Moldova, opening up new possibilities for economic growth, political stability, and strengthened ties with European neighbors. Time will tell whether these Eastern European countries can successfully navigate the path towards EU membership and realize their vision of a brighter future within the greater European family.
