Doha, Qatar – The Ministry of Municipality has officially opened two new parks in the Al Thumama and Al Mi’raadh districts, Nabaq Park and Athl Park, respectively. The openings represent a continued investment in Qatar’s green spaces and public amenities, aligning with the nation’s long-term development goals. These projects, developed in collaboration with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), aim to enhance the quality of life for residents and promote sustainable urban environments.

The inauguration ceremonies, held this week, were attended by Abdullah Ahmed Al-Karrani, Assistant Undersecretary for General Services Affairs, and other officials from both the Ministry of Municipality and Ashghal. The new additions to Qatar’s park network are designed to meet international standards and cater to diverse community needs.

Expanding Green Spaces: A Focus on Qatar’s Parks

The development of Nabaq Park and Athl Park is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Municipality to significantly increase green spaces throughout Qatar. According to ministry officials, this expansion is directly linked to the Qatar National Vision 2030, specifically its pillars of sustainable development, environmental protection, and community well-being. The initiative also supports the Third National Development Strategy 2030, which prioritizes the continuous expansion of recreational areas.

Park Details and Amenities

Nabaq Park, located in Al Thumama, covers 3,723 square meters, with approximately 67% dedicated to green areas – roughly 2,494 square meters. Features include a 181-meter jogging track, a children’s play area designed for ages 6-12, a fitness zone, shaded seating, and accessible restrooms.

Athl Park, situated in Al Mi’raadh, spans 3,368 square meters, with 55% of the area designated as green space (1,865 square meters). The park boasts 40 trees, ornamental plants, a 192-meter jogging track, a children’s play area, 776 meters of pathways, and accessible restroom facilities. Both parks have been designed with full accessibility to accommodate individuals with disabilities.

Eng. Abdullah Ahmed Al-Karrani emphasized that the Ministry is working towards a comprehensive plan to increase per capita green space and improve the quality of life in residential areas. This includes not only developing new public spaces but also upgrading existing ones with modern facilities.

However, the expansion of urban greening isn’t solely about adding parks. The Ministry is also focused on enhancing the aesthetic character of residential areas and creating safe, attractive, and environmentally friendly public spaces. This holistic approach aims to encourage residents to engage in recreational and sports activities, fostering a healthier lifestyle.

The Ministry’s strategy aligns with a growing global trend towards prioritizing sustainable cities and recognizing the vital role of green infrastructure in urban environments. Research indicates that access to green spaces is linked to improved mental and physical health, as well as stronger community bonds.

Meanwhile, the inauguration of these parks is part of a series of development projects being implemented across various municipalities. These projects aim to create healthier and safer urban environments and promote a culture of sustainability. The Ministry’s commitment to these initiatives reflects Qatar’s broader vision for a greener and more prosperous future.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Municipality has indicated plans to continue implementing high-impact projects aimed at enhancing the urban landscape. Future developments will likely focus on expanding green spaces in underserved areas and incorporating innovative design elements to maximize the benefits of these recreational facilities. The timeline for the next phase of park development remains uncertain, but officials have stated a commitment to ongoing progress towards the goals outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030.
